Trust me when I say that it's not fun to live with a small closet. My boyfriend and I live in a 1940's home that has closets the size of phone booths without upper storage. Two people cramming their entire wardrobe along with linens into one bedroom closet is a bit difficult. This has led me to think of different ways to create more storage. One idea I came up with was to use a bookcase. Because the bedrooms are small in our home, a wardrobe was a bit too big. However, bookcases are thin, but offer a lot of storage space. If your closet is small, here's how you can make a bookcase into a second closet.
Use Baskets for Small Items
Whether you're storing socks or small accessories, baskets are the perfect option for bookcases. You can even place baskets in between piles of folded clothes to prevent them from sliding around. The key to using baskets is to measure the bookcase before buying your baskets. This ensures that the baskets fit without hanging over the edge of the shelf. You may also want to purchase decorative baskets if you choose to leave your bookcase open.
Place Folded Clothing on Upper Shelves
It's best to place stacks of folded t-shirts, jeans and other items on the upper shelves to prevent them from getting dirty. Solid baskets can then be placed on the lowers shelves to hold the smaller items. You could also use the lower shelves for shoes, if you like.
Cover the Shelves with a Curtain Panel
If you want to keep your second "closet" hidden from view, you can use Velcro to attach a curtain panel to the top of the bookcase. I recommend also adding a curtain hook to the side of the bookcase so that you can easily pull the curtain aside and look through your wardrobe. Another option is to use a Roman shade, which can be pulled up to reveal the contents.
Add Hooks to the Side for Additional Storage
The outside of the bookcase can offer storage for hanging items such as robes and handbags. Just remember not to clutter the sides too much or to use a side that faces away from the entry to your bedroom. This will keep your small bedroom from looking cluttered.
Just because you have a small closet doesn't mean you have to have a cluttered bedroom. A bookcase makes a wonderful second closet and can be covered to hide the clutter. Best of all, you can add as many bookcases as you want to create a full wall of clothing storage.
