How to Create a Sookie Stackhouse Halloween Costume

Sookie Stackhouse, the spunky heroine from the True Blood television series and Southern Vampire Mysteries book series, has become an incredibly popular character. The waitress/vampire lover is a favorite among both book and television fans for her sweetness, boldness, all around common sense, and no nonsense approach to life. This is a guide to creating a Sookie Stackhouse Halloween costume.

Hair

Sookie's hair will be incredibly easy to duplicate and you can fix it in one of two ways. For the first, tie your hair back in a ponytail. This is great if you're duplicating Sookie's work look. For the second, wear your hair down and curl it, perhaps held back with a headband. This is great if you'll be spending the evening on a date with your own "Bill" aka Sookie's vampire boyfriend. Sookie's hair is also long and blonde, so if you want to be as close to the original as possible, a wig might help achieve that look.

Clothes

Replicating Sookie's clothes will be an easy and fun task, but probably not the best idea if you live in a cold climate and will be spending much of the evening outside. Sookie's perhaps best known outfit is her waitress uniform, which consists of black shorts, black tennis shoes, and a shirt that says "Merlotte's Bar and Grill" across it. While on the show the restaurant name is represented by a small green and white insignia in the corner, keeping it too subtle might keep people from correctly guessing who you're supposed to be. I would suggest, instead, using a fabric pen or iron-on letters and having "Merlotte's Bar and Grill" in large letters across the front of the shirt. If you don't want to go for the waitress look, opt instead for a flowery spaghetti strap summer dress and sandals -one that, like Sookie's usual date-wear, shows a bit of cleavage.

Accessories

Perhaps the best Sookie Stackhouse costume accessory is bite marks on the neck. Take a red marker and make two small lines on the side. Another option is to tie a scarf around your neck, as Sookie did in one memorable episode after being bitten. If you're looking for something creative to carry with your costume, you can create your own Merlotte's Bar and Grill Menu out of plain printing paper. Of course, whether you just make the cover or include actual menu items and prices as well is all up to you!
