How to Create a Sophisticated Baby Boy's Room

Lori Godin
All too often designer inspired looks change the face of how we choose to decorate our nurseries. The trends for this year, 2008, are modern, sleek and sophisticated that are appropriate for the nursery but will also grow with the child until the reach the teenage. We have reached a balance in the world of design that allows us to incorporate these two worlds; the sophisticated nursery is the result. Read on to learn how to create a sophisticated nursery for your baby boy.

Consider stripes, as they inspire clean lines and define the space, giving it that do-it-yourself designer feel. Stripes can be easily created on the wall by choosing horizontal or vertical. For this nursery we are going to work with three shades of the classic little boy nursery color, blue. Use rich shades of the color palette using three vertical spaces on the wall going from lighter to darker as we reach the bottom.

Begin from the top, paint around the Moulding and a third of the way down the wall. When you reach the space where the new will paint will start, allow the paint to dry and tape a line around the perimeter of the room. Ensure that the lines are taped tight to the wall, or the line will appear jagged. Next, start with the second color and paint another third of the way down the wall, from the painted line. After this is dry, again, apply another layer of tape and begin with the third color. After allowing the paint sufficient time to dry, remove the tape and the lines should be clean, crisp and modern.

These lines create a focal point in the room before any furniture, art or other items are even inserted into the space. Using horizontal lines draws the eye around the room and creates a space that can be defined with the furniture, a great piece of art or letter cutouts that spell the Child's name.

When designing the nursery for your son it is important to remember that the space should be functional for play, relaxation and eventually, a quiet place to study. Define the zones of the rooms for these areas and work on them accordingly.

Use coordinating bedding, curtains and art in contrasting colors such as green, white, teal with punches of color such as turquoise or white and black patterned furniture. The room should be a comfortable space for the infant, as well as the parents, as much time is going to be spent in this room.

Make the space their own with toys, and family pictures that are sure to become favorites. Use comfortable pieces of furniture that are child-friendly and will grow up with the infant.
