Halloween only comes once a year which is why we should celebrate it in style! Here are some handy hints and tips on how to get the ultimate Halloween yard that will scare even the most evil of souls! In order to get the most unique look it is best to go for homemade decorations. This will give your yard and house a more stylish look and not like a Halloween store outlet.

One of the key things to try to achieve when decorating your yard is a scary yet funny scene. You don't want it too scary otherwise you won't get any trick or treaters! Lots of lighting is a good idea too. One of the most basic homemade Halloween decorations are jack-o-lanterns.

- Jack-o-lantern. In order to make a jack-o-lantern you will need a pumpkin, a spoon, a large knife and a candle. Before you start to hollow out the pumpkin you should first draw the face on the front. You can do this by free hand or you can get a template that you can download from the internet. Once the pumpkin has been hollowed out using the spoon, you can begin to cut the face out. Always make sure that there is someone grown up and responsible if using a sharp knife. When the face is cut out, insert the candle, light and place on your porch. The more jack-o-lanterns you have on your porch, the more light there will be and the smaller children will be scared.

- Scary signs. To make a scary sign to stick in your lawn you will need a stick, paper/card, coloring pens and glue. To begin with you will need a scary picture. This will be available from a book or from the internet. You can print them off, trace them or even buy them from shops. When you have found the picture, color it in with pens or paint. Glue the picture to a stick or steak and place it near the front of your garden. You can use several of these across your yard and use different pictures.

- Flying bats. To make these flying bats you will need fuzzy black balls (or black wool), black card, string or thread and pins (preferably butterfly). These bats are quite simple to make. Firstly draw two wings on the black card. You can use a pencil or use a white pen so it highlights the edges. Cut them out and attach them to the black balls or wool with the pins. Tie the string or thread around the balls and attach them to anything that it can hang from. If you want to make your yard look really good you can create a line across your yard from say the lamppost to the front door and attach bats all up it to the house.

Halloween is a great time of year and it's a time that the community can really get together and celebrate the occasion. It may only be one day a year but the lead up to it can be fantastic and a great way to get your kids creating too. Happy Halloween!
