I think the easiest way, and most fun way for kids to start an ancestry scrapbook is to start with yourself. For kids this is a great starting point, because to little kids the world centers around them. It is also easier to start with more current people and to work backwards. It makes it easier because you are starting with the information that you know.
You should get a large scrapbook and have your child put a picture of themselves on the first page. It is also nice to include any special awards or articles about them. If you are helping a child make the ancestry scrapbook this is a great opportunity for your kid to express themselves. You want to put as much information about this person as possible. You can get creative and have drawings or even report cards. Any information that is important to you, is great to include.
Next you want to work backwards and put the parents of this person. If you are doing this yourself you can nicely write all the information you know about these people. It is great to put several pictures of these people. You should also include any special documents. If you have a decorative marriage certificate it is nice to include it. If you are helping a child make this scrapbook depending on the age of the child they can write a story about their parents or they can draw a picture. The can also decorate the page by writing words on the page that reminds them their parents. When you let a child create the special page it will be a great memory to look back on.
You want to continue with your scrapbook this way, working backwards. You can make a scrapbook as big or as small as you need. Often you will discover that all of a sudden you come to a standstill because you don't know anymore information about somebody. When you run out of information about somebody it is a great opportunity to do research about this person. For kids this can be a great learning experience. You can go to a library and look up information about family history. You can also find out a lot of information about your ancestors on-line.
Making a family ancestry scrapbook is a great experience. Be sure to include lots of pictures. Also make sure you always use archival paper and pens. You want to make sure that this scrapbook can last for many generations to come.
