How to Create a Unique Baby Shower Center Piece

mommy2
Baby showers are very special events. They can fun to plan and fun to attend. The decorations, games, and food are all very important factors when planning a baby shower. The last baby shower that I helped plan was a lot of fun and was a great success.

The hit of the food table was a watermelon baby carriage. The carriage was a beautiful centerpiece and also a serving dish.

The carriage is easy and fun to make.

Materials

Medium size oblong watermelon
Fruit
One Orange
Four Strawberries
Toothpicks
Kiwi
Sharp Knife

(You may want to use a marker and draw teh cuts before using a knife) Begin at one end of the watermelon by cutting in a jagged fashion creating small triangles. Cut lengthwise about three-fourths to the other side. About three-fourths through the length of the watermelon, turn your cut up. Your cut should curve to the top of the melon and back down to the other side. The cutting should create a dome type shape on one end. This end that was not cut will create the hood of the carriage. The open section that was cut out is the part of the carriage that the baby would be placed into and will hold the fruit.

Use the cut piece to create the handle of the carriage. Begin cutting the handle from one end of the cut out section. Cut up, over, and down. The piece should have definite edges. The handle should be cut in a wide block U shape.

Clean out the watermelon by removing the seeds and the meat. Remove the seeds from the meat and save the meat to place back into the watermelon carriage.

Attach the handle to the carriage by placing a toothpick into each end of the handle. The toothpicks should then be stuck into the carriage.

Slice an orange, leaving the peeling on.

Slice a kiwi.

Cut the top off of four strawberries.

Use a toothpick to layer the orange, kiwi, and strawberry. Lay the orange slice flat. Place the kiwi slice in the middle of the orange slice. Lay the strawberry, flat end that you topped, against the kiwi. Stick a toothpick through the three and attach to the carriage for a wheel.

Create three more wheels and attach to the carriage.

Fill the carriage with fruit. If in season, you can use fresh fruit. Frozen or canned fruit also works well.

Place the watermelon I the center of the food table. Decorate around the watermelon carriage with garnish or ivy.

Place a dish of fruit dip beside the watermelon.
