How to Create a Walk in Closet in Your Bedroom

If you find that your closet has overflowed into your bedroom and no matter how many things you get rid of, your closet it still too small, it may be time to create a walk in closet in your bedroom. This idea is especially useful to couples, as each of you can now have a closet. Here are some tips to make it happen.

Choose a wall in the bedroom that does not have have doors and preferably does not have windows (though this is not necessary if there are more windows in the room. Consider the architecture of the room and take advantage of any niches built into the room that can be used without taking away from the overall space within the room. This is where you will locate your closet.

Measure the chosen wall, and go shopping for free-standing modular wardrobe units. Hopefully, you will have space for two to four units. Purchase enough cabinets to take up the span of the wall, you will be using for your closet. Consider cabinets sliding doors or curtains over hinged doors.

As your cabinets will be facing the wall to create a walk-in effect, you must decide what to do with the backsides of the cabinets. This will depend on the amount of space you have. Your options are to cover it with fabric and use it as a headboard for your bed, or to get bookshelves of the same width to back up to your wardrobes. You will want to use hardware to anchor the cabinets together for stability.

As mentioned earlier, place your cabinet units, side by side, facing the wall, about two and a half to three feet from the wall, leaving enough space for you to walk through it easily. On the wall facing your cabinets, you can add a series of hooks and rods for hanging more clothes.

Since the closet is in the bedroom and will not have a separate door, take extra steps to make it neat. Purchase closet organizers, baskets, and bins to keep your items organized, orderly, and attractive.
