Your desktop is as unique and individual as you are, you may use it to show off your work or even your own personal expressions.
Maybe you're feeling that you really want to take your Windows Vista platform to a higher level.
Vista Skins are a great way to do that. With Windows Vista Skins, you can add personal touches to your Dreamscene and your desktop windows with vivid colors and cool looking icons. A Dreamscene is basically an animation or video that comes to life right in front of you on your computer screen.
A skin basically hides the plain-jane appearance of an average looking window or desktop gadget and completely changes the whole appearance by adding high tech graphics and real looking pictures that truly look like they will jump right out and grab you. Some even make you feel as if you could walk through your desktop and be right there.
Skins can be made by a graphic software program called Stardock, there are other software programs out on the market, but since I have been playing around with Vista Skins, I have found Stardock to be the easiest to work with. Stardock produces awesome graphics. It takes just a little amount of practice to achieve the look that you want. If you need ideas, doing a Google web search is the quickest way to find a style that you will want to use.
Once you have located the skin you want, you will go through a process called Skinning. Skinning actually writes the data and the image to the software to create the desired skin. This will change the look and feel of your whole entire window screen of the application you choose to use. There are some skins out there that can be designed to change the look and appearance only, not affecting the application at all. A Windows Vista themed skin is one such example. Designed with the original colors and design of Windows Vista Software.
There are even some skins that are created to make certain computer applications run smoothly. This allows everything to be much more simplified and easier to use.
Another really cool skinning technique is how some of the desktop icons can literally change their appearance or look right within the application, resembling or relating to a certain theme. For example if you create or download a Star Trek or Sci- Fi theme, the skin will change and transform your application to resemble a cool looking space ship, with a dark sky and moonlit stars dancing in the background. Maybe a C3PO robot or unclaimed planet will change the look of the old dreary looking icons to become a perfect match to the theme. The general idea is to give you a very close replica of the specific look and feel of your creation.
Skins for your computer applications are not new to the Vista software, they have actually been quite popular since late 90's and have since been used to dress up music players and Instant Messengers on the personal desktop. Vista though has brought the high resolution graphics and animation to the skin world, making them more life-like on the user's screen.
Skins are an enjoyable way to express ones' own individuality. When you begin searching for a skin, base your theme around what hobbies or sports you enjoy doing such as bowling, golf or even cooking. A golf skin could be created using golf balls for the icons, a putting green for the background, and you could use a golf club to replicate the toolbars. Some women are into the popular designer hand bags such as Louis Vuitton and Coach. It would be simple to create a Coach Skin, by using borrowed images off of the internet.
Creating personalized Skins for your Windows Vista applications doesn't have to be complicated if you utilize the right tools.
The possibilities are abundant with so many different colors, styles and shapes to choose from.

Post a CommentWow! I have Vista and would like to try this. Too bad it doesn't come free with Vista.
Thanks. Good article for those of us that need a tutorial.
I just recently upgraded to Vista - I am sorry I did.
Great info, I use a Mac though!
Good info! Very well explained.
This is so cool! Thanks for the info. I remember back when XP first came out. If you used themed skins it would really bog your system; they took up so much memory usage. I hope that has improved! :)
Don't use windows, but great run through of the process. I understood it.
