How to Create a Work-From-Home Blog

Dayle Turner
I've put together an internet blog site that focuses on business opportunities for those who are looking to make money in a work-from-home scenario via the internet. Though my site isn't a reinvention of the wheel, my hope is that the resources I make available there will help people looking for work-from-home ventures and while doing that I hope to make some additional money for my family.

Since I'd already had some experience with blog creation with blogger.com, I went there for the simple reason that I knew how blogger.com worked. I know that there are other blog creation sites on the web, (see this AC article for a discussion of some of them) and perhaps at some point I will delve into these other sites. But for now, blogger.com it would be as my home base for my work-at-home blog.

Info that I read told me that finding a niche market was the way to go. Being from Hawaii, I decided my niche would be a blog site that focused on work-from-home information for folks in Hawaii. So I named my site "Work at Home Hawaii."

I had already decided that I would include on my work-from-home blog short reviews of work-from-home companies that I had come across. How I would make money from these reviews is by signing up as an affiliate to pitch products and services that I thought would work for my work-from-home niche. A couple sites that I am using that I recommend are www.clickbank.com and paydotcom.com. Available at these sites are a wide array of products and services available for purchase or to pitch as an affiliate. What I did was [1] sign up with clickbank and paydotcom.com (no charge to do this), [2] choose some work-from-home opportunities to pitch on blog, [3] create links to these opportunities on my work-from-home blog. Now when folks visit my site and click on these links, I'd get a little monetary incentive. Better yet, if folks purchased a service or product via the link on my work-from-home blog, I'd get a bigger monetary incentive.

I also decided my blog would include stories of my experiences, both good and not-so-good, in my effort to forge out work-from-home business for myself. I think people would enjoy and benefit by reading these experiences. I know I have benefited by reading about others' experiences in developing their own work-from-home businesses.

I knew that a couple keys to a blog's success were [1] getting the word out, which I did by using pinging services, by posting blurbs on the Hawaii version of Craigslist and on work-from-home forums I found on the web, and [2] having regular postings that were helpful and interesting.

I can offer some advice about posting blurbs (i.e. advertising) about your blog. First and foremost is to make sure to follow the ground rules established by the forum or ad site. I ran afoul of craigslist due to my first post being posted in the wrong category. Fortunately, I wasn't banned from the site. Instead, I was given a slap on the wrist, basically being told, "Bad boy. Don't do that again (or else).

A couple of articles on AC also give good advice about putting together a successful blog. Here is one. And here is another.

In any case, good luck in your adventure in the blogosphere. With work and good fortune, you might make a fortune.
