How to Make Creative Taffy Apples

Brad Kamer
One of the biggest reasons to look forward to fall is due to the apple harvest season. This season brings forth such tasty items as cider, pies, apple cider donuts, and most importantly, caramel or "taffy" apples. The caramel apples sold today are pretty much the same style as peddled thirty years ago. It is relatively easy and fun to create a taffy apple in the comforts of the home if deciding to forgo the premade variety sold at the grocery store. The process is pretty easy and a great way to burn a rainy Saturday or Sunday afternoon with friends and family. The ingredients can be simple to plentiful. At the very least one will need about a half dozen to dozen apples, melted caramel, and plenty of crushed peanuts.

Those starter ingredients will produce the basic caramel apple. If that sounds boring, there are plenty of ways to take your taffy apple task to a new level with these fun tasty ideas.

Sprinkled Apples

If your taffy apple audience includes those that are allergic to peanuts or dislike this topping, consider using candy sprinkles. The chocolate jimmies or multicolored sprinkles work great on the caramel apple. Try to stick with the color theme if possible. For example, if the taffy apples are indicative of the upcoming Halloween season, encrust the apple into a dusting of orange and black sprinkles to commemorate the spooky season.

Miniature candies

As if the apple and caramel are not sweet enough, there is potential to make the apple even sweeter. Try using a combination of different tiny candies such as miniature M&Ms or Snow caps to your caramel apple. Other candy toppings include miniature chocolate chips or Reese's pieces. The sugar fanatics may want to take this one step further and go with skittles or other sugar sweet confections. The level of sugar additives and sweet and tart candies are all a matter of personal preference.

Cereal

Cereal just isn't for breakfast anymore. Consider using your favorite breakfast cereal such as rice krispies, cocoa krispies, or cocoa pebbles to coat your taffy apple. The possibilities are endless. It is recommended to roll the apple over a very light cereal that will easily adhere to the apple quite easily.

Granola

One tasty topping that goes well over the caramel apple is granola. The granola cereal is usually small enough to coat the entire apple. If your box of granola is rather chunky due to honey or other sweeteners, make sure to crush the granola into much finer bits before coating the apple. The granola will give this treat an apple crisp sort of taste.

Cookie Apple

When reaching into the cookie jar, consider this treat a potential coating for the dessert apple. The prime cookie candidate to roll the apple would be a hydrox or Oreo cookie. Other potential cookies include ground up oatmeal cookies or peanut butter sandwich cookies.
