How to Get a Credit Card with Bad Credit

Stephanie Mojica
In this electronic day and age, credit cards are often a dreaded necessity and seeming pipe dream for people with bad credit. Car and hotel rentals often require bonafide credit cards, rejecting popular bad credit options such as debit and prepaid cards. However, there are a variety of bad credit card applications that can be approved for virtually anyone, and most don't require upfront fees or hefty savings accounts deposits.

Orchard Bank products are especially popular for people with bad credit. Their interactive online bad credit card applications pre-select a product the consumer is likely to be approved for. Their tool determines this by credit score and reported income information. Most applicants that do not owe Orchard Bank money are likely to be approved for either the platinum or classic MasterCard, which does not require a security deposit. People with the worst credit score, such as those recovering from a recent bankruptcy or multiple legal judgments, may be offered the secured card product. A secured card acts just like a regular credit card, but the credit line is backed by a savings account from which withdrawals cannot be made.

For people not eligible for unsecured credit cards, another viable option is the New Millennium Bank MasterCard and/or Visa. They do not require any credit check, but the credit line of up to $10,000 must be secured with a savings account deposit. Keep in mind you will not be able to withdraw the money without closing the card.

The best way to make use of your new credit card is to make small purchases, and pay off most or all of the balance each month. Never make a payment late; otherwise you will do further great harm to your already-bad credit. After months of on-time payments and keeping your card under the credit limit, you will likely receive a credit limit increase. In the case of a secured card, you may get some or all of your deposit back.

When this happens, to best utilize your new credit you should continue making small purchases and paying off most or all of your balance each statement period. Always remember that carrying debt will only worsen your credit and financial situation.

No matter how bad your credit is, there are options out there to enjoy the security and prestige of a credit card while rebuilding your credit score. With responsible use and careful research, bad credit can be a distant memory.
