Credit Cards used to be the symbol for ultimate wealth, owned usually by businessmen and rich spoilt brats. However, times have changed and credit cards are the necessities for everyone today. Virtually all banks offer credit cards today, with the most famous ones being Visa and MasterCard. This widespread presence of the credit card is also fuelled by the rise of the internet. The internet has necessitated the use of the credit card due to the many internet shops that have sprung up online. Moreover, online shopping is so easy and fun that people simply need to get hold of a credit card. The benefits offered by companies are also attractive.

However, even though people use credit cards so often, few stop to think about how credit cards are processed, and how they function .What exactly happens after the salesgirl swipes the card and you sign the receipt?

To answer this question, we must first examine the equipment used for credit card charging. There are different processes for different charges. For example credit is handled differently for online purchases, automated transaction machines, verification machines and more. Your credit card information data needs to be verified and security issues need to be addressed for safe transfer. Reliable communication is needed for the transaction of important information. Information leaks could result in failed orders, or worse, fraud.

There are also many services for credit card related issues. Many companies manufacture credit card machines and processing gear for online transactions, shop transactions and service charging. The industry also includes courier services and postal providers to help send credit card bills accurately and on time. Retailers also need to set up payment collection kiosks at their shops for quick and timely collections of bills.

Besides these transactions, the credit card industry also includes the customer service personnel working at call centers to help answer queries and troubleshooting. Moreover, there are sales people to help one pick and choose the right credit card, and to help you fill out your application form. In addition, we must not forget the card bureaus that hold a wide base of people's personal credit information, as well as for companies. This data shows the person's spending habits, his or her outstanding bills, and if he or she has bad credit before. This is very important because the person's database can determine if sudden sprees mean the possibility of a stolen card.

Credit cards are issued by banks. But users should know that the industry behind it is huge and needs much effort from many people. It is a huge industry that employs many and benefits commerce to no end.
