How to Crochet a Christmas Stocking

Angewl
When I was a young girl I had an adult friend that would crochet the most amazing things. It looked really interesting and I wanted to learn. She helped me crochet my first blanket.

I had only crocheted baby blankets and hats. I crocheted baby blankets for my youngest three and I also would make them as gifts for my pregnant friends. They were a big hit.

A few Christmases ago I decided to try and crochet a Christmas stocking for my sister in laws twin baby boys. Then I made some for my children and one for my husband. I experimented a little and some turned out better than others. I made 5 that year.

My sister in law had another son and for the past 2 Christmases she has mentioned one for him. I went looking for the pattern I had used and was unable to find it.

I did make another one and finished it up today.

This is a pretty simple design to follow and if anyone would be interested in making a Christmas stocking this would be a good one to try.

The items you will need are a crochet hook. Find one in a size that you like. An F or G hook works well. You will need to pick out some yarn. Red Heart and Lion Brand yarns are good ones to use. I picked out red, white and green as the colors for mine. You will also need a pair of scissors and a threading needly with a large hole for the yarn to fit through. I used a sack needle for mine.

To start out you will need to do a chain of four and then join it with a slip stitch (sl) to make a round. Then you will chain three.

Now you are onto your first round. You will do twelve double crochets (dc) in the ring and then join with another slip stitch (sl) and chain three more.

Round three you will do two double crochets (dc) in the top of the first double crochet (dc) and then in the second one you will only do one double crochet (dc). Then in the third hole you will do two and in the next you will do one. You will continue this way until you reach the end where you will end with one double crochet (dc) , join with a slip stitch (sl) and chain three. (In round three, you could do this differently and make a smaller stocking by only doing one double crochet (dc) in each hole instead of alternating the two and the one double crochet (dc).

Now you will do 8 more rounds of just one double crochet in the tops, joining with a slip stitch and chaining three.

Now we are onto the heel. Here you can keep the same color or switch to a different color if you wish. I kept mine red. You can choose any color you desire.

When you start the heel, you will be on row number thirteen. You will do one double crochet (dc) in the tops of row twelve until you reach the last twelve then you will chain three and turn.

You will six more rows in this manner.

When you get to the last one in row nineteen, you will fasten off and fold the heel in half and sew up the back of the heel for the seam. This is when you will use the needle and the same color yarn you were using for the heel.

After completing the seam, if you had switched to another color for the heel you can switch now back to the original color or a totally different one. Depending on the look you are going for.

Attach the yarn at the seam and you will chain three. You will do one double crochet (dc) in the joining and then one double crochet (dc) in the tops all the way around and join with a slip stitch (sl) to the first double crochet (dc) and chain three.

You will continue this until you get to the length that you like. It could be anywhere from eighteen to twenty-two more rounds.

If you do not want a cuff you can go to about twenty-two rounds and then fasten off and weave in the ends.

Do a chain for as long as you would like your loop to be to hang.

I stopped at about eighteen rounds and changed colors to white to make a cuff. I changed my stitch to a single crochet (sc) in the tops all the way around.

When you get to the length you would like your cuff to be you can stop at the end of the round and join with a slip stitch (sl) and fasten off and weave in your ends and make your loop for hanging.

When I got to the end of mine, I decided to do a design on the bottom of my cuff. I chained the three and then I did two double crochet (dc) in the same hole, then did a slip stitch (sl) in the second hole. In the top of the third double crochet (dc) I did three double crochets (dc) in the same hole. In the fourth hole I did another slip stitch (sl). I continued this until I got to the last hole and joined with a slip stitch (sl), then I fastened off.

I chained red, white and green to make my loop.

I would consider this a beginner to moderate design to follow.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!
