How to Crochet an Old-Fashioned Nightgown and Slippers for a Doll

The crocheted nightgown and slippers will fit a 13" or 14" vinyl or porcelain doll. The nightgown and slippers are easy to crochet if you have basic knowledge of crochet stitches and standard sewing. Depending on skill level and how fast you crochet, the nightgown and slippers can be made in one day.

Old-Fashioned Nightgown and Slippers

Supplies:

Glue gun
Glue sticks
6 1/2 oz. peach yarn
9" piece of peach ribbon
23" piece of peach ribbon
13" or 14" porcelain or vinyl doll
Size G hook (4 1/2 mm)
Yarn needle
1 small toy bear
Small piece of peach ribbon to tie around the bear's neck
2 peach flower appliques
Scissors

Crochet Abbreviations:

pat - pattern
ch - chain
hdc - half double crochet
dc - double crochet
sts - stitches
lp - loop
lps - loops
yn - yarn
rds - rounds
rep - repeat
trc - triple crochet
tog - together
yo - yarn over
sl sts - slip stitches
aro -around
sl st - slip stitch
acr - across
nt - next
dec - decrease
inc - increase
sc - single crochet

Gauge:

4 dc - 1 inch
5 sc - 1 inch

Directions:

Nightgown - All work is done on the back lps. (lps away from you)

Row 1 - Ch 18, sc in second ch from hook, and each ch acr. Ch, turn. (17 sc)
Row 2 - 2 sc in nt sc, on sc in sc, rep pat aro. Ch 1, turn. (26 sc)
Row 3 - Rep row 2. Ch 1, turn. (39 sc)
Row 4 - Sc in each sc acr. Ch 1, turn. (39 sc)
Row 5 - Sc in nt 8 sc, ch 5, skip 6 sc, sc in nt 11 sc, ch 5, skip nt 6 sc, sc in the last 8 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 6 - Sc in each sc and ch acr. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 7-9 - Sc in each sc acr. Join, ch 1 after rows 7 and 8. After row 9 join the row to the beginning ch 1. (37 sc)
Row 10 - Make 2 dc in each sc aro. Join, ch 3. (74 dc)
Rows 11-13 - Dc in each dc aro. Join, ch 3 after each row. (74 dc)
Row 14 - Make 2 dc in nt dc, one dc in nt dc, rep aro. (111 dc)
Rows 15-20 - Dc in each dc aro. Join, ch 3 after each row. (111 dc)
Row 21 - Make 2 dc in each dc aro. Join. Cut yarn, then weave in the ends. (222 dc)

Sleeves

Row 1 - Join yarn to the bottom lp of one of the armholes. Ch 1, evenly space 18 sc aro. Join to beginning ch.
Rows 2-4 - Sc in each sc aro. Join, ch 1 after each row (18 sc)
Row 5 - Sc in nt sc, dec over the nt 2 sc, (To dec yo and draw up a lp on the nt 2 sc, there should now be three lps on the hook, yo and pull yarn through all 3 lps-dec made.) Sc in nt sc, dec over the nt 2 sc, sc in the remaining sc acr. Join, ch 1. (16 sts)
Row 6 - Dec over the nt 2 sc, sc in nt sc, dec over the nt 2 sc, sc in nt sc, dec over the nt 2 sc, sc in each sc acr. Join, ch 1. (13 sc)
Row 7 - Dec over the nt 2 sc, sc in nt sc, dec over the nt 2 sc, sc in each sc acr. Join, ch 3. (11 dc)
Row 8 - Make 2 dc in each st around. Join. Cut yarn, then weave in the ends.

Repeat these instructions for the other sleeve.

Slippers (make 2)

Row 1 - Ch 4, join to beginning ch. Ch 3. Make 4 dc, 4 hdc, 4 sc, 4 hdc in the ring. Join to beginning ch 3. Ch 3.
Rows 2-3 - Dc in each dc, hdc in each hdc, sc in each sc, hdc in each hdc. Join, ch 3 after row 2. Join, ch 1 after row 3.
Row 4 - Dec over the nt 2 sts, sc in nt st, dec over the nt 2 sts, sc in each st aro. Join to beginning ch. Ch 3.
Row 5 - Ch 3, sl st in nt st, ch 3, sl st in nt st, rep around ending with a ch 3, sl st to beginning ch 3. Cut yarn, then weave in the ends.

Dressing the Doll and Decorating the Nightgown

Put the nightgown on the doll, then sew up the back. Glue the 23" piece of peach ribbon to the center, front of the nightgown, and right above row 10. Make sure the ribbon hangs evenly on each side. Tie the ribbon into a bow. Glue the appliques above the the bow. Tie the 9" piece of ribbon around the doll's head. Tie the small piece of ribbon around the teddy bear's neck. Place the bear in the the doll's arm. Place the slippers on the doll.
