How to Make a Crocheted Doily Purse

An Easy to Make Purse

Karen Barnes
Ever wonder what you could do with doilies you find at yard or garage sales, thrift shops, or the one grandma gave you? Making a purse from those crocheted doilies is an easy project that even a novice sewer can create.

With the different designs and sizes of crocheted doilies, the possibilities are endless for making a purse or other type of bag. Today, we are going to use crocheted doilies to make a purse.

Items Needed for the Crocheted Doily Purse

Fabric. Any fabric can be used for the interior lining of the purse. You will need enough material to cut out two pieces for the liner.

Two Doilies. The doilies will need to be the same size and shape. Out side of the that, the designs and colors don't have to match if you don't want them to.

Ribbon. The ribbon will be used to make the strap and a way to close the purse. The ribbon should be a wide enough ribbon to use as hand or shoulder straps. A smaller, thinner ribbon should be used as a closure for the purse.

Two pony beads. Two pony beads will be used on the end of the ribbon for the closure.

Scissors. You will need a pair of scissors to cut out the liner and the ribbon.

Sewing Machine. Using a sewing machine will make it easier to make the crocheted doily purse from start to finish.

Making the Crocheted Doily Purse

Cut two piece of fabric larger than the doilies. With right sides together, sew three of the edges together. Turn the liner right side out and hem.

Sew the doilies together on three sides. Insert the liner with the right side facing out, and sew around the opening area along the hem in the liner. Cut the straps the length desired and sew them about a half inch down on the inside of the handbag.

Cut a piece of ribbon one and half times larger than the circumference of the handbag. Weave the ribbon through the doily near the top of the handbag. Thread a pony bead on each end of the ribbon. You can tie the draw string into a bow when you have it closed.

You can make the crocheted doily purse for gifts at Christmas, birthdays or for craft shows. For larger purses or bags use the same process on a larger scale.
