Creating crafts while you're watching television, waiting in the doctor's office for your appointment, and while traveling in the car for long periods of time. Crocheting homemade potholders can keep your hands and mind busy. There are many other items you can make for your home using crocheted thread. The craft project, homemade crocheted potholders, is just one of these items.

Materials Needed for a Crocheted Potholder
2.5 ounce skein of sport crochet thread. The skein of crochet thread can make two potholders. One crocheted potholder will be approximately 5 inches square, and the other potholder will be approximately 7 inches squared.
Size 5 or F crochet hook. The hook will be used to crochet the potholder.
Scissors. The scissors will be used to cut the crochet yarn.
Directions for the Crocheted Potholder
Tie a slip knot loop at the end of the yarn you pull from the skein of yarn. Insert your crochet hook into the loop you made. You will need to crochet a single stitch line 28 stitches long.
With the crochet hook inserted into the chain you just made, count, including the loop you are in, three stitches back.
Insert the hook into one of the open slots of the fourth stitch and create a single crochet stitch.
Single Crochet Stitch
A single crochet stitch consists of putting the hook through a stitch in a chain, pulling the crochet yarn through, grabbing more yarn with the hook in the two stitches and pulling the crochet thread through both loops.
Continue down one side of the chain with the single crochet stitces.
When you get to the last stitch on the end of the chain you started, make three single crochet stitches in the last stitch. Then continue on with the single crochet stitches around the base of the potholder.
As you continue to crochet around the base, the ends that you made the extra three single crochet stiches on will begin to fold over to make the other side of the potholder. This will start about the fourth to sixth row. Continue the crocheting process until the two sides meet.
Once the potholder opening comes together side be side, cut off twice the length of the yarn from corner to corner leaving the crochet yarn attached to the potholder so you can use it to "sew" the two sides together following the next steps.
"Sewing" the Opening Shut
Take the crochet hook, push it through the stitch across from the last stitch you made. Pull the yarn through the top of the stitch. Continue the process until you work your way to the other corner.
Tie off the yarn into a knot. Cut off any excess yarn.
You now have created your first crocheted potholder.
You can also make the crocheted potholder for Christmas gifts for family, friends, and co-workers. Many people like receiving gifts they can use frequently. They know your homemade crocheted potholder is made with love.
