How to Crotet a Harry Potter Scarf and Pen

Emily Griffin
With the upcoming Harry Potter film coming out, here are a couple of ideas to get the HP Spirit going!

Prisoner of Azkaban Style Scarf

Supplies
1 skein of Red Heart Super Saver, Burgundy #376 (MC)
1 skein of Red Heart Super Saver, Gold #321 (CC)
I/9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook

NOTE: You can use any of the house colors you desire to use.

Instructions Ch 60 stitches in MC.

Row 1: dc in each ch across, ch 3, turn.

Rows 2-8: work in the pattern that you have already established , switching to CC at the end of row 8.

Rows 9-10: dc in each dc across, ch 3, and then switch back to MC at end of row 10.

Rows 11-12: dc in each dc across, ch 3ing, and then switch back to CC at the end of row number 12.

Rows 13-14: Repeat like in rows 9-10. *

Repeat from * to ** until desired length.

Do one more repeat of rows 1-8, fasten off.

Add fringe, if desired.

Broom Pen

Supplies
F/5 (3.75 mm) crochet hook
Worsted weight yarn in brown and yellow
Any type of fancy, hairy, lashy yarn in yellowish colors
Small amount of Black string
One stick pen (non-clickable type)
Yarn needle (for weaving in the loose ends of yarn) Instructions Rnd 1: With brown Ch 2, 6sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, join first sc to form a circle. (6 chains in total)

Rnd 2: sc in each sc around. At the fourth row, you can pull it "right-side-out" because it will seem inside out.

Continue until it is as long as your pen. Once you have reached the desired pen length, fasten off brown color. Weave in end.

Row 1: With yellow, attach to any one of the six chs at the top end of pen. ch 7.

Row 2: sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch in next 6 chs back to end tip of pen. Slip stitch into next brown ch, ch 1, turn.

Row 3: ch in the next 6 chs, ch1, turn.

Row 4-7: (Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until you have 6 yellow rows.

Next, join yellow row 1 to yellow row 6 by ch stitching them together. (It will resemble a corn on the cob stuck to the end of a stick - the handle).

With the black string, wind around this same place you just did with the yellow previously. Please refer to the finished product picture. This makes it look even more like a traditional broom. Weave in the string end to hide it too.

Now you surface crochet using the fancy yarn to make the broom end look more straw-like. I used a yellow eyelash yarn. (With my Harry doll's broom, I used a fall colored Cha Cha yarn.) By surface crochet, I mean, you simply single crochet along the broom end, latching into the loops created while you were making the broom. I followed along in rows going up, then down, then up again. This isn't exact science. Just try to fill in as much or as little as you wish.
