How to Cultivate the Writer in You

Jordan Smith
You have decided you want to become a writer and allow your creative juices to flow. Whether you write for a hobby or for a living, here are several steps that will help you improve your writing skills.

Writing takes a lot of patience and hard work. In order to become an efficient writer you must spend time perfecting your craft. You also have to decide how much time you will spend improving your writing skills. This would basically evolve around your agenda. After you have decided how much time you will spend on your writing for the week, you would need to decide what's the best time for you to write. Would you prefer mornings, afternoons or evenings? This would be very important to you, because you want to make sure you have the quiet time that is needed for you to focus on your work. It is also a great idea to spend time reading as well. This will allow you to experience and become familiar with different forms of writing. You will also be able to expand your vocabulary. Remember if this is how you support your family you will be writing for an audience.

Another key to cultivating your writing is to set weekly goals. Decide how many articles or stories you will write for the week and work out a plan to obtain that goal. Make sure your goal is attainable.

The Internet will allow you to get your work out into the open. You can promote your work on different platforms on the Internet. Different sites pay in different ways, but the majority will pay either for each item submitted or on an ongoing basis determined by the number of page views an article or story receives or in some cases both. You are not limited to the Internet. You can also promote your work to different publishers that accept your style of writing. Make sure that you read the guidelines carefully before submitting any of your material. Many times if you do not follow the guidelines the editor will not consider your work no matter how well written it maybe. Before you start promoting your masterpiece make sure you have corrected all errors such as: grammar, spelling and punctuation mistakes. If you can not afford to pay someone to edit or proofread your work ask a friend or a relative to edit it for you.

It is essential that you be consistent. Make a plan and stick with it. Write, write and write. The more you write the better you become. It does not matter if it is a article, a story or in your daily journal. Keep a pen and notebook handy. Make sure you have one beside your bed. You will be surprise what ideas will come to you during your quiet time. You can also purchase a mini or digital recorder.

Be persistent. Do not give up if your work has been rejected. It will happen to the best of writers. The key is to keep on trying and improving. You will eventually succeed.

Strive to enhance your work. It does not matter how well you write there is always room for improvement. Take a community or on line course on writing. This will help you in more ways than you can image. You can also join a writing group or a forum, that meets on line or in person. You will also be able to voice your opinions and give constructive feedback on their projects as well. Some of these groups also have a website. You will be able to post your articles or stories in its entirety or you can post excerpt of your work.

Following these steps will intensify your writing skills and bring out the writer in you.
