How to Make a Curtain Rod Out of a Tree Branch

Just because you are decorating on a budget doesn't mean that you can't decorate with style. The world around us is filled with free materials and resources that can be turned into beautiful decor with just a little bit of elbow grease and imagination.

One way you can use nature to decorate your home is by turning a tree branch into a unique curtain rod. Curtain rods can be expensive - especially if you have a lot of windows in your home. By making one yourself instead of buying one your only investment will be a can of spray paint, a little bit of sandpaper, curtain rod brackets and a few hours of your time. The pay off is that you will create a unique, one-of-a-kind curtain rod that will instantly add style to any room in your home. Here's how to make a curtain rod out of a tree branch:

Supplies

- A tree branch that is long enough to span the width of your window

- Curtain rod brackets

- Spray paint in a color of your choosing

1. Start by selecting a tree branch. Look for a sturdy branch that is long enough to span the entire width of your window plus a few inches on either side. When selecting your branch consider how it will look hanging above your window. Straight branches with no smaller branches coming off them work well for clean, modern looks. Slightly curved branches with smaller knots or branches coming off of them can be more whimsical or rustic.

2. Prepare your branch. Start by trimming any smaller branches off the large branch. You can cut them flush with the main branch or leave a short section of the smaller branch sticking out depending on the look you are going for. Next, take a piece of sandpaper and run it over your branch to smooth out any really rough spots and to loosen any debris that may be stuck to it. Once your branch has been cleaned and prepared you are ready to paint.

3. Paint your branch, Lay out old newspapers to protect the surface where you will be painting. Lay the branch on the newspaper and cover the side that is facing up with a coat of spray paint. Allow the paint to dry and then flip the branch over and paint the other side. Apply another coat of paint if necessary. Allow the paint to dry completely before proceeding.

4. Hang your branch. Start by hanging curtain rod brackets on either side of your window to support the branch. Use a level to ensure that they are hung at equal heights on either side of the window. Place your painted branch in the curtain rod brackets and adjust it so it looks right hanging above your window. Curtain rods made from branches work best with tie-top curtains. Tie each curtain onto the branch adjusting the length of the ties as necessary to ensure that the curtain hangs straight.

As you can see, making a curtain rod from a branch is really quite simple and affordable. With a little bit of effort you can easily make this project in an afternoon and can add a lot of character and charm to your room.
