How to Customize Google Adsense for Blogger

Monetize Your Blogger Blog

If you are working with Blogger and are either currently or planning on monetizing it with Google Adsense Ads, it is very easy to customize the look of your ads so that they blend in seamlessly with your Blogger template color scheme. If you are a blog owner and don't currently have an Adsense account, and you would like to learn more about the Google Adsense PPC program, read Google Adsense: Monetize Your Blog.

Why Should I Customize My Google Ads?

When you are planning your PPC advertising initiative your goal is probably to make as much money as possible through clicks on each Adsense link. Simply throwing the ads on your site is not enough to fully realize your PPC potential when monetizing your blog. There are many factors that come into play to enticing readers to click your Adsense, or even look at it for that matter!

Anyone who has spent time looking at a web page sees Google Adsense, making it easy to distinguish as an advertisement, and also easy to skim right over without a second glance. By customizing your ads, you are communicating to your reader that these links could be relevant, and while they are still going to look like ads (because they are of course!) they will at least stand out among the other Google ads bombarding internet users every day.

Customizing Google Adsense for Blogger

I assume you have a Google Adsense account and a Blogger blog to work with before beginning these instructions, otherwise you will probably be lost!

1. Sign into your Blogger account and click on the "Template" tab at the top of your Blogger backend.

2. Underneath the "Template" tab you will see a link titled, "Fonts and Colors." Click on this link.

3. From this view, you can see your Blogger blog, and you're also given a list of sections on your blog with colors and a color palette associated with these sections. The sections are titled things like,

  • Header
  • Text Color
  • Post Title Color
  • Post Header Color
  • Post Border Color

Just to name a few, and it will also depend upon the template that you've chosen for Blogger.

4. Decide where you want to place your Google Adsense within your blog. The top section of your site, the side bar, the bottom bar, etc. Record the colors associated with that section by clicking on that section within the top area of your color palette. Record the numbers that pop up to the right of the color palette, and make sure to choose a background color, title color (link color,) text color and URL color. Some of these colors might be the same, for example, you might want your Google Adsense text color to be the same as the title (link) color of each ad.

5. Sign into your Google Adsense account and choose "Adsense Setup" from the top menu bar. Choose, "Adsense for Content."

6. Decide if you want to use an "Ad Unit" or a "Link Unit." There are examples on this page to help you decide which one looks better for your site. Remember, we'll be changing the colors!

7. Here is the fun part! You're given an example ad, with color blocks and empty fields to fill in with the numbers your copied from your Blogger backend. Fill in these number sections with the numbers associated with your Blogger colors, and you will see an instant preview of what your Google Adsense ads will look like!
TIP: I recommend using the same background color as the section you choose to put the ads on your Blogger blog. I just think it looks nicer than having the whole block of ads stick out like a sore thumb!

8. When you're happy with the look of your ads, which you can see through the preview to the left of the color area, you can save your template to use later if you want. To do this, click on "Edit Palettes" above the color area. You will be taken to another page, with a bottom portion displaying "Save as New Palette." Type the name you want to associate this color palette with, and "Save Palette." Easy!

9. Click "Continue" and save as a the Adsense channel you are using these ads to display on.

10. Click "Continue" again, and your code is ready! Simply copy the code and ad as a new element in your Blogger template editor and your Google Adsense will fit beautifully into the color scheme of your blog.

From experience, I can tell you that your click rate will go up! Not within minutes, but over time you will see more clicks on your fancy new Adsense Ads. Good luck!
