Now that you have all of your supplies, you will want to wash the mug with warm soap and water and let it air dry. If you dry it with a cloth, it will leave dust that may show up in the paint later. So avoid letting anything touch the surface of the mug to minimize this effect. After it is completely dry, you will want to put a small amount of paint onto the foam plate. Make sure you stir the paint before you pour it since there is a chance that your paint may have settled. Shaking the paint will not mix the paint up enough and stirring should only take you about a minute more. You can use the pencil eraser to make any small round dots on the surface of the mug. If you mess up on a part of your painting, you can wipe it off when it is still wet. You can remove them with a variety of different things ranging from a soft cloth to a q tip depending on the size of the mistake and the paint around it you may try either method.
After you have finished painting your mug you will need to let, it set and then put it in the oven for a little while. The temperature and time spent in the oven depends on what kind of paint you bought so, just follow the instructions that came with the paints. If you used the Liquitex glossies, you will need to let your mug sit so the paint can dry for at least twenty-four hours.
If you are planning to give this as a gift, you may want to fill the mug with hot chocolate or another drink mix, candy canes or their favorite candy. Then you will wrap the mug with some cellophane wrap and tie it together with a ribbon. If not then enjoy your own custom painted mug, and if anyone asks where you bought it, you can tell him or her that you made it yourself!
