Read the labels on all of your groceries.

You will probably be shocked to see how many calories are in some of the foods you think a re good for you. When you are reading the labels just think about all of the calories that you will be adding to your waist line. Make a wise decision. You are the only one in control of what you put into your body.

Always buy low-fat dairy products

Most low-fat dairy products have reduced calories. Be sure to read the labels because some low fat dairy products do not always have fewer calories.

Have a salad

Try to always have a salad before a meal. It fills you up with healthy greens before you hit the main course which is usually loaded with calories. The more salad you eat the less hungry you will be and the less calorie laden food you will eat.

Eat vegetables

You should have at least 5 servings of vegetables a day 8 is ideal. Make vegetables the main dish instead of meats. Pile your plate with fresh veggies. At least half of your plate should be filled with vegetables.

Portion size

Read the labels on the food you buy and take note of the portion sizes. A general rule of thumb is to never eat more than what fits in the palm of your hand at any meal. Vegetables are the exception. You may eat the size of two clenched fists if it is vegetables.

Reduce alcohol consumption

Alcohol can add inches to your waist if you drink in excess. Alcohol is full of empty calories. Sometimes after a few drinks the effects of alcohol can takeover and you forget all about reducing calories and just eat whatever you want. Try not to drink any more than you have to. One glass of red wine with dinner is ok and in some studies it is shown to be healthy for your heart.

Plan your meals

If you do not plan you will most likely fail. Buy a good low calorie cookbook and create a shopping list every week. If you have a list you will be less tempted to just grab whatever looks good.

Eat your meals at home

At home you can control the size of your meals and what you put in your meals. Restaurants make food taste good. They are not too concerned with how many calories they are adding to your diet.
