Now since winter is over your electric bill may go down for a few months, well at least until the air conditioner is running full time. It seems that there are less and less months that you do not have a higher-than-usual electric bill. But the electric bill is one bill that you can control a little.

There are several things that you can do to lower the electric bill every month. Every little thing that you do to save electric will make your bill lower. Use these tips to lower your bill and save money with your power bill.

1. Turn off the lights, while you probably have heard this all of your lives this is one of the biggest energy waster there is. Not only lights inside but sometimes the porch light stays on all night or you leave a light on for when you return home. If you installed a motion activated light you wouldn't have to run the outside light all day and evening, saving you money the motion activated light will only come one when you walk onto the porch.

2. Turn off appliances when you are not using it. If you have a coffee pot for example that has the time on, you don't need to run that all day when you are not there and not making coffee. Your computer and television is another thing that uses power even if you think you have it shut off. The computer has the modem, the monitor and other things that you have hooked up to it. If you hit the power strip that everything Is hooked into you will be able to shut it all off while no one is home, then all you have to do is turn on the power strip again to get it all back on. It won't take long for it to boot up.

3. Since many electric companies are using remote readings, there is a bigger chance of them making an error in your readings. Read your meters yourself and keep track of your readings yourself then compare it to your bills. This will also alert you to if you are using more kilowatts than you think you are. Reading your own meter will help keep you on track and you won't be shocked when your bill comes in.

4. The hot water tank will keep the water hot, but will run when no on is home. Turning this off during the day when no one is home can save you money. Try it one day, turning it off and reading your kilowatts. See how much of a difference it made.

To save money and to sum it all up, get a timer for heating and air conditioning, turn off the lights and read your meter. You will save money just by doing these simple tips.
