How to Daily Wash Dishes by Hand

Tips for Staying on Top of Hand Washing Your Dishes

Carla Michelle
Most everyone hates to wash dishes, especially by hand. "I'll do it later" quickly turns into an impenetrable mountain of silverware, dishes, glasses and pans stacked so precariously that you dare not breathe on it. The following tips are based on what has worked for me.

#1 Tip for Hand Washing Dishes

Keep the dish strainer out. Sounds simple enough but it is amazing the difference it makes when it is out all the time. If you have a double sink place the strainer in one of the basins. This keeps you from being able to pile dishes in that half of the sink. If you only have one basin then place your strainer on the counter next to the sink.

#2 Tip for Hand Washing Dishes

Use a small strainer. It is typical for people to wait until they have enough dishes to fill their strainer before they start. Unfortunately, by then the pile is overwhelming and it can always be done tomorrow.

#3 Tip for Hand Washing Dishes

Tomorrow never comes. We all know this but it is such an easy procrastination tool that we use it anyways. Set a general time that you dedicate to washing the dishes even if there is only one item. Examples include: before you leave the house for the day, after cooking a meal, etc. If you cook more than one meal a day at home after each meal may be the best option.

#4 Tip for Hand Washing Dishes

Wash and rinse in the same basin. Place the plug in your sink and add only enough water to soak your sponge or wash rag. As you rinse dishes the water level will rise. This helps to avoid running the water constantly and lets you keep an eye on how much you are using.

#5 Tip for Hand Washing Dishes

Put away your clean dishes. Washing dishes does not do you any good if there is no place to put them. Immediately after washing dishing, dry them off and put them away, or wait until they have dried. Be sure to do them both in the same day or make it routine to put them away right before washing more.

#6 Tip for Hand Washing Dishes

Have a plan. No matter what tips you choose to use, make a plan and stick to it. Treat yourself with something small everyday you wash and put away dishes. Splurge on a manicure for washing dishes everyday for a month.

Before you know it, you'll forget that you ever wanted a dishwasher in the first place. You never know.

Now if only I could teach my hubby to wash dishes! He says he'll do them, and then they sit, and pile up. Then, because I'm so frustrated with the sink being full, I do them myself!

I do dishes by hand every night because I don't have a dishwasher. I wish I had one because I get tired of doing them but it is a pet peeve of mine to have dirty dishes in the sink. I try to do them in the morning and every night but sometimes I only have time to do them at night. These are good tips! :)
