How to Get a Dark Tan Fast... And Keep it Longer Too!

Three Days to Dark - Tanning Secrets from a Former Salon Owner

Nicky B
If you need a hot, sexy tan and you don't have time to waste, here's some tips and tricks to get you to dark skin in a matter of days without spending every waking minute in the sun~

You will want to purchase the following items:

A good sunless tanner. Don't go for the cheapest one. Select one with Anti-Streak Technology and Skin Tone Color Matching. I prefer the Aerosol Continuous Spray kind.
A good lotion that really nourishes. Don't be fooled by lotions that smell good and have fancy wrappers. Just because a lotion smells great doesn't mean it works! Get something that gets the job done. A good lotion will last all day and after several days of use you'll notice a total change in skin appearance and feeling.

A good tanning lotion. There's several different kinds of tanning lotions. Read my other article called Tanning Lotion Unveiled for more info. If you need a dark tan ASAP, then get a high bronzer lotion.

A good exfoliant. Once again, do not be fooled by pretty bottles or those amazing fragrances.

One spray tan at a salon

The night before you go tanning use get a nice bath and use your exfoliant liberally to remove dead skin. The key to a healthy tan is properly nourished skin. You're skin must be exfoliated and packed full of vitamins in order to get dark. If you want to apply the exfoliant twice, go for it! After you are done bathing, dry off thoroughly and moisturize really well. If you have dry skin and you notice the moisturizer disappearing as soon as you apply it just apply more. You will know when you're properly moisturized because your skin will be soft and smooth and feel even.

The first day you will want to go regular tanning. If you're new to tanning in a salon only go for 10 minutes or ask to go in a super, burn-free bed. Burn free beds have a 12 minute maximum on them and they have special bulbs that will not burn your skin, even if you have never stepped foot in a salon before.

After you tan try and wait four to six hours before bathing. This allows your bronzers to really sink in and give you nice pigment.

When you get your bath or shower you will want to do the exfoliation and moisturizing process again.

The next day you will want to get a spray tan. I suggest doing a "level 3" if available. The key to a good, even spray tan is rubbing! As soon as the sprayer stops spraying you will want to quickly rub your entire body. Start with your legs to prevent streaks. Just rub them as if you were putting on lotion in a major hurry. Then do your belly, chest, back, shoulders, arms and face. You will need to cover your whole body in about 30 seconds, so go fast. This eliminates all streaks!

After getting out of the spray tan booth you will want to use the provided towel and wipe your whole body really well. Don't worry, the tan wont wipe off.

Then wash your hands - nobody likes orange palms!

Your tan will begin to develop within an hour and continue to develop for the next 24 hours. Wait at least 8 hours before bathing!

After 24 hours you can apply your store bought spray tan to do any needed touch ups or to get even darker. Stay away from exfoliating for the first 3 days of the spray tan, but continue to moisturize every night!

THE AMA HAS DETERMINED THAT MOST AMERICAN WOMEN SUFFER FROM A LACK OF VITAMIN D. NATURAL SUNLIGHT AND/OR TANNING BEDS SUPPLY NATURAL VITAMIN D. TANNING BEDS TAN THE SAME WAY THE SUN DOES. IT IS NO MORE DANGEROUS THAN LAYING ON THE BEACH. A GOOD SALON OWNER WILL TAN YOU WITHOUT BURNING YOUR SKIN. IF YOU LAY OUT ON THE BEACH TOO LONG YOU CAN BURN YOUR SKIN AND THAT WILL CAUSE DAMAGE. I MUCH PREFER TO TAN GRADUALLY IN A TANNING BED THAN BURN ON THE BEACH.

I live in Ky, we don't have no such thing as a burn free bed around here. Unless its something new in big citys I agree with Mike! :) Nothing is safe about tanning, but it does feel good and make a person look pretty! ;) 10 mints is a long time for a first time tanner too!

Great tips. I tan at home and I have to tan a lot to get dark. A tan makes me look healthy and I love the warmness especially in the winter. I think the exfoliating tip is helpful because my skin has been getting dry lately and everytime I tan I look light still. Time for some vitamins and replenishing! :)

Mike you are such an idiot! just because you have a tanning bed doesn't make you the king of all thing to know about tanning! I mean a lot of people own tanning beds, and they are probably a heck of a lot smarter than you!

  • christy6/30/2009

Mike, you're an idiot thinking you're some sort of tanologist or tan genius just because you own a bed. That stupid bed was a waste of money in the first place. Go to a salon, what are you afraid to show your ugly face in public? You're just some well-tanned douchebag, get over yourself.

ive done this and it works

You both are idiots. First things first, sara you might want to go back to high school to get some education that might help your grammer. Secnd, Mike, you're not the only person in the world who owns a tanning bed, ever heard of a tanning salon? Before you start to mention how you KNOW EVERYTHING, maybe you as well should go back to school and start facing some actual facts about the real world and tanning beds, I'm not saying I know everything but I do know that I don't know anything and that my dear friends is the first step to knowing everything, is to admit that in all actuality you honestly know nothing. So, now I guess it is up to you to hash out the results. It's called research, not basing your judgement on the one person that told you one thing. Study and you might learn something.
