How to Make a Data Back Up Plan

Zac Linzmeier
When it comes to data stored on your computer, it is not a matter of if it will be lost but rather a matter of when. Because of this a comprehensive backup strategy is more than simply a good idea, it really is a necessity. Consider the following points when preparing a backup plan for your computer's data.

Do you want to back up a few files or directories? Do you want to backup your entire hard disk, including your operating system? If your hard disk crashes, it may be easier to restore your computer's operating system and applications manually, as long as you have your original system restore disks. However, depending on how many applications you had installed on your computer this can be very time consuming and a backup of your entire computer including the operating system is often much quicker, especially if some of your CDs are lost or damaged.

You also need to think about how frequently you should back up your computer. What this point really boils down to is how much data are you willing to lose and how much of an inconvenience it is to backup your data in the first place. Often people do not put very much sensitive data on the computer so backing up a couple times a month is sufficient. In the end this boils down to personal preference and computer usage habits.

One final thing to think about is the volume or capacity of whatever storage or backup device you plan on using. If you have a high capacity storage device than it is practical to backup as often as you please; on the flip side, it may be unrealistic to make backups every week. This also flows in to the first point that you considered which is how much data you should back up. Obviously, if you do not have enough room to backup all of your data you will not be able to do so.

Consider these points in order to make a comprehensive and appropriate data backup plan which is personalized for you and your computer usage habits. There is no right or wrong method to backing up your data but rather a best fit for you personally. Hopefully you'll be able to use these tips and pointers to create the ideal data backup plan for your personal habits. Weighing the pros and cons of each of these points against your needs should provide you with an excellent data backup plan.
