How to Date a Cougar

Ted Sherman
Despite all the jokes, stories and misinformation about dating cougars, in reality they're just like other people when they return to the dating game. Of course, they're not blushing schoolgirls any more. If that's what you prefer, stay away from the savvy, no-nonsense cougar.

By definition, a cougar is an attractive, available woman of between 40 and 60 years of age, who prefers younger men. They're usually very aware of the dating game's rules and are willing to participate as equal partners. How do you date a cougar? Let us count the ways.

1. How to track down your cougar: The hunt is almost as exiting as the conquest. If you're with a large company, consider cougars where you work. You can go online to surf the many dating sites, including those that specialize in cougar connecting. Check with local clubs and bars frequented by women seeking younger men.

2. A cougar should be young again: When you first start dating a cougar, you should quickly erase the age difference. As in the Sinatra lyrics, you want her to say, "You make me feel so young; You make me feel like spring has sprung".

3. Don't do those young guy things: When you're with her, she won't want to horse around and swig beer with your buddies. She won't care about the latest pro sports scores. Your cougar will be much more interested in a different kind of scoring.

4. Compliments galore: Cougars are successful in getting younger men interested because they always know how to look stylish. Unlike the young girl with the wind-swept hair and casual clothes, they dress in the latest fashions. If you want to impress a cougar, be free with your compliments about her clothing, hair, make-up and everything else about her that attracts you.

5. Let her into your world: However, compromise and grow up to her level. While she may prefer Bach instead of rock, take her to a contemporary music event where you can both enjoy it. Try a funky restaurant that's interesting, but not too far out for her tastes.

6. Bring her presents: They don't have to be expensive, but just frequent and thoughtful. Every woman appreciates flowers and plants. If you want your cougar to feel young again, bring her candy in small amounts at a time. If you know what kind of lotion or perfume she uses, buy her some.

7. Long term commitment: Relationships with cougars are usually short term. You meet on a cruise, at a bar or company event. After a few hours, days or weeks, one or both will become restless to resume your former lives, probably with your own age group. Be grateful for the experience, and go your own way with fond memories and the traditional regret: it was great while it lasted.
