There are several means of dealing with counter-productive behaviors, and it is extremely important to choose the right methods in order to maintain employee satisfaction. It is important to consider the problem at hand when deciding the method to use. When an employee is hired rules should be established in the beginning. These rules should be written and explained to new recruits. The new employees should also have to sign a statement that suggests that they understand the rules provided for them.
The use of cameras may be appropriate, but they can easily cause dissatisfaction, another method of controlling stealing could be achieved through inventory. If inventory is taken on a constant basis it will be easy to determine when things go missing. This may not be the best means for determining who the thief is, but it will cause the employees to think twice before stealing because they will know it will be noticed. If stealing persists then cameras or locking up inventory can be a good idea.
Polygraph tests just seem expensive and extreme, but in severe cases they are good to use. Polygraph tests are very costly, and the results are not always efficient. Using polygraph tests are not the best means for dealing with counter-productive behavior in business, but there are several other methods that are beneficial.
Vandalizing is a harmful behavior that can cause a business to be viewed negatively. It can be costly to deal with, and it can give a business a reputation that is lacking in the eyes of customers and employees. Vandalism can be dealt with by using cameras. Employees that are submitting to this counter-productive behavior should be dealt with strictly.
Random drug tests are important in certain job titles, a forklift driver should be drug tested because they can endanger someone's health. Randomly drug testing everyone can cause dissatisfaction amongst employees because it is a hassle and violates privacy rights. If an employer thinks a drug problem is evident they can try talking to human resources and the employee first and suggest some sort of counseling, but testing everyone can be demeaning.
These methods of dealing with counter-productive behavior can help provide a business with rules and guidelines for appropriate behavior. These methods will help an employer deal with these problems in a way that does not cause employee dissatisfaction.
