Depression in the family can be hard for a spouse, child, parent, and friends, and theirs is nothing we can do about it - at least that is what some people actually think - but it's really up to you. There is nothing wrong with having this illness in your family for every family in the world has this illness running through their own families. The only problem is that not everyone knows how to deal with it on their own. If this is the case there are doctors that specialize in treating depression. If you do decide to help your family member you need to do it the right way without been depression. If you force them to treat their depression you can scare them and put them deeper in depression they already were. Remember, that this is an illness not a cry for attention. The first thing you need to do is realize that it is not your fault; a half of those that suffer from depression can be from their pregnancy, fear, confusion, stress, or even sadness. Once you have realized this it is vital that you educated yourself thoroughly about depression. Understand the symptoms and treatments for this illness. By educating yourself you might be ably to learn how to possibly communicate with your depressed spouse, child parent, and even friend. You can also create a support system that conceives of positive people and those that had or have the same illness in their family or life themselves. Do not have any one that is of negativity or not experienced depression in their life. If you are not sure on how to start a support system or need more information on support group in your areas contact your local and/or national mental health hotline; or you can search for them online. You must understand that depression with children is more complicated then adults. Be careful on how you comfort your depressed child anything can trigger strong emotions and a possible attitude of hurting themselves (not all children), so I urge you to have them speak to a professional. Together as a family you and your siblings can overcome the history of depression in your blood line. Also please come to understand that if someone in your family just started taking medication for this illness and still depressed it will take time, in some cases 6 - 8 weeks.
