How to Deal with Gender Bias at Your Work

It can be very difficult for a woman to go to work everyday knowing that there is gender bias going on. This is a very unfair situation and it can lead to a lot of emotional heartache for her. Many times she will even want to give up and quit her job because of it. There is nothing worse than going to work and not feeling appreciated or feeling like someone else is going to get rewarded and recognized instead of you. In this article I would like to share with you a few ways to try to deal with or overcome gender bias.

The first step is to remember why you are at work to begin with. What is this job meant to do for you? Is it to help pay the bills and is it doing that? This may help you not to act irrationally when it comes to quitting. I know that quitting is a temptation because of the unfairness but you have to look at the money that you are presently making. If the money is fulfilling the need of the family then you might want to hang in there. I know that this can be very humbling but sometimes we just have to do it.

The second step is to decide that you want to be the best employee that there is in the company. You can do this by arriving early to work, coming back on time from lunch, and always do your best at work. This will help you to be proud of yourself. There is nothing better than feeling good about what you do. You will have a free conscious too. Don't try to get back at the company for having gender bias. It will only hurt you in the long run. Another important thing that you can do is to keep a log of what time you came in and what time you left. Keep a journal of what you did that day for the company. The reason for this is so that you will have the ability to show your boss these records if it is ever necessary.

A third step that you can take is to ask your boss for a private meeting. You can explain to your boss at that time that you feel that the company has been unfair to you. You will need to have some examples for the boss to be able to understand what you are talking about though. Show him how another male employee got a promotion when you should have been the one to get one. Keep track of these things; they will be to your benefit. While you are at the meeting with the boss you will want to talk to him about your strong points. You will also want to show him your journal. You never know you just might walk out of there with the promotion that you wanted.

A fourth step that you can take if the gender bias continues is to go to the head of the company and explain what is happening. If this does not seem to help then you can always file a claim against the company for the gender bias. You can find out what your rights are by reading up on the Equal Rights Act, Civil Rights Act, and also the Family and Medical Leave Act. Any of these sources will tell you what your rights are and how to go about correcting these issues.
