How to Deal with a Loud Mouth Neighbor

Aimee Gold
Hopefully you don't have to deal with this issue like I do but I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who has a loud mouth or rude next door neighbor. My neighbor is one of the loudest, rudest women I have ever met. She complains about everything I do, from my dogs occasional barking to how close I park my car to the end of my fence. She comes out of her house screaming and cussing at me. I have been in this house for almost a year. At first I thought maybe she was just going through a rough time and had a shorter temper because of it. I mean the things she yells about are so trivial surely there was something else behind the hostility. Well the yelling and cussing didn't stop, if anything it had gotten worse.

I had to figure out some solution. I love our house so I wouldn't ever consider moving, but the yelling was affecting my happiness and making me miserable. The first thing I tried was ignoring her. It is extremely difficult to ignore someone who is seriously disrespectful, I mean how can you listen to someone screaming at you, without wanting to lash out. I wanted to be the better person so I kept my mouth shut. I just couldn't understand why she would choose me to behave this way. She would never act that way with my husband; she was always polite and respectful to him. So what was I doing that was so awful? Truth is I really didn't care why she was really so rude, it just had to stop.

I debated calling the police, I even inquired as to what I could do, but decided that might make things worse, and didn't really want to go that route anyway. I finally resulted to avoidance. It kind of makes me feel like I lost some kind of battle, but in the end it was worth it. Now I can feel happy in my house. I don't get angry, upset, or frustrated by her behavior when I don't know she's doing it. If she wants to yell and cuss I don't have to acknowledge it, I also don't have to worry about stooping to her level by mouthing off as retaliation. Avoiding my neighbor was the best way for me to deal with her, I hope it can possible work for you too!!
