How to Deal with Nosebleeds

How to stop a nosebleed.

Nose bleeds are a nuisance, and there is a lot of bad advice given about them. I suffered with a damaged blood vessel in my nose for years as a teenager, which resulted in frequent nose bleeds (between one and three per day) so I know what a pain they can be, and here is the advice that the doctors gave me.

Do not tip your head back!

This is very bad advice! Tilting your head back will result in the blood running down your throat, which is highly dangerous.

Don't lie down!

Your head should be upright, sit or stand.

Pinch.

Many people think that you should pinch the soft, fleshy bottom part of your nose, this is not true, all this will do is temporarily stop the blood from escaping through your nostrils, until you let go.

The place where you should pinch is just above the soft fleshy part of your nostrils, feel the sides of your nose and notice where your nose becomes hard, this is the part you should pinch.

Pressure.

Don't pinch too hard, or too gently, it should be a firm, consistent, constant pressure, but it should not hurt.

Time.

Nosebleeds vary from person to person when it comes to how long they take to stop, 10 minutes tends to be the average for a normal nosebleed. But if your nosebleed does not stop within 30 minutes seek medical advice.
