How to Deal with the Stress and Pain of RLS

Steps to Help Cope with RLS

Most people have problems where they cannot sit still; cannot sleep well at night, constantly moving their legs, does this sound like you? This may be the cause of an illness that plagues many people around the world. This illness is called, restless leg syndrome (RLS). In this article, we will review some symptoms and ways you can relive the pain of this illness.

The first issue we will discuss are the different symptoms of, RLS. RLS can affect you at times when you're trying to relax or sleep. While relaxing or sleeping you may feel uncomfortable, burning, painful feeling as if you're being stuck by needles or bugs are crawling in your skin. You feel these pains usually in your legs, feet, thighs, and knee area. These symptoms can be very annoying and take a while to go away. There are two forms of, RLS the first form is consistent and with time can get more severe. The second form is usually caused by other problems like diabetes, high blood pressure and so on; the symptoms usually clear when the other ones do. RLS is known to be caused the body not being able to send signals to the brain in the proper way.

The next issue we will discuss is how to find relief with RLS. The first step when feeling the pains of, RLS is to move your legs and feet constantly and rub them too feel some relief. The next step would be to have a healthier diet. Eating the right foods can give your body proper nutrients which will help your brain function better and your nervous system. Some of the foods and drink to avoid are fatty foods, dairy products, caffeine, beer, cigarettes, soda and so on. Another step you can take is, taking a hot shower before you relax; this will keep your muscles and nerves relaxed. The next step, is exercising getting a good workout two or three times a week will keep your body in good shape. Some exercises you can do are, walking, running or joining a gym.

The final issue we will discuss is how to care and cope with having RLS. RLS can also be caused by stress, pregnancy, not sleeping well at night, and staying in one place for too long. There are many medications you can take for RLS, such as painkillers, sleep medications, nerve medications, and other similar related medicine. Most of these medications can cause reactions to certain people always consult your doctor before taking any medication. Trying to cope with RLS, can be an easy task at first it may be hard because this can be a lifelong problem and many people are ashamed to talk about it. Some steps to coping are, talking about it with your friends and family they will help you cope when they better understand your problem. Another step is doing different activities to help take your mind of the pain, which may be difficult but a good idea to try. Some more steps are, stretching every day; stand up and walk when you can so your legs do not stay in one position for long times, and massage your feet and legs by doing so eases your nerves which will decrease the pain.

There are many other ways you can cope and deal with RLS; these are some of the main steps to take. RLS may be a lifelong illness but if you follow these steps and understand RLS more better you can control it and not let RLS control you.
