How to Deal with Those Certain Co-Workers

Everyone at some time or another will more than likely have to face an office clown, bully, know-it-all, or even snob. So how do you go about dealing with these kinds of people? Here are a few tips that may help you out.

Dealing with an office clown

One thing you do not want to do is give them any form of encouragement. Do not laugh at their silly jokes or attempts to be funny. Do not let them know it bothers you in anyway since this will usually make them worse. Simply ignoring them is one of the best things you can do. If worse comes to worse and it gets to the point of "taking it too far", then it is time to talk to the boss. It is really not advisable to talk to the person yourself due to the fact that a lot of times this will backfire on you and make them act even worse just to annoy you more.

Dealing with an office bully

Sometimes dealing with a bully is a little more complicated than dealing with an office clown. The very best thing you can do is not let them bully you. How do you do that? Stand up to them, let them know that you are not going to put up with it, and they are not going to push you around. Never actually tell them that you are going to tell the boss, but this is also a step you can take if necessary. However, another thing you can do is simply ignore the person. If they are trying to tell you to do something just walk away and do not even listen to them. If they follow you around and tell you they are talking to you, simply turn around and tell them you are not listening and do not want to hear it. Make certain you let them know that you are not intimidated by them (even if you are). Do not let them get the best of you.

Then there is the office know-it-all

Here is the person who knows every inch of the business including your job. They are always trying to tell you what you need to do. They even try to tell the others in higher positions what to do. Now how do you deal with them? Ignore them, ignore them, ignore them. Do your job, do what the boss or your supervisor tells you to do, and shove their advice in the "garbage can". If it gets to the point that it gets out of hand and the person starts thinking they are "the boss", then you need to tell the boss before it gets excessively annoying.

And the all time most fun office snob

How do you deal with them? This one is the easiest of all, ignore them completely. Do not let it bother you if they do not want to talk to you. Do not try to make them be your friend. Do not try to make them like you. If it bothers you that they do not want to be your friend, never ever let them know that. Simply pretend that you could care less if they are even in the office or not. Most of the time there is no need to call in the boss on this one. The only time you would need to do that is if the person was supposed to be helping you with your job but they do not or they do not tell you something they are supposed to.

So the next time you have to deal with one of these people, I hope this will help you deal with them a little easier.

I agree you can 'ignore' to a certain extent but this has happened to me - i was incorrectly perceived by my new boss as a 'know it all'. Was ignored when trying to help/inform/teach process. The amount of time wasted including time of other colleagues, my new boss got into trouble by another manager, and I got burned. I complained to HR and his boss and got a bonus. His 'ignorance' ruined the working relationship and he learned the hard way. So I'd be careful about 'what it is' your are ignoring.
