My recipe for Death by Chocolate is not a unique one. It was passed on to me from a family member. So someone else out there may have the same one, or one that is similar or different. But I have found this to be TRULY Death by Chocolate. Beware! I have had many people say they have never tasted anything like it. I honestly have never witness a death resulting from it, but I believe it is possible! This is a great recipe to bring to a party. It looks really cool and has a great name, so it will be the topic of conversation before anyone even tastes it. It is unbelievably wasy to prepare, so even the novice chef can do it.
Things you need: one pan of brownies, 6 cups of chocolate mousse, 2 containers of Cool Whip, and Heath Bars - either 6 large or one bag of mini size. If you can't find Heath bars, I have also used Butterfingers or Fifth Avenues to be a decent substitute.
First, prepare 4 cups of chocolate mousse and chill according to directions. Next, make a pan of brownies. These don't have to be from scratch. Just get the store bought box of Betty Crocker mix, add your eggs, oil, and water, and bake according to directions. You can do these first two steps ahead of time. Then, just chill the Cool Whip, and crumble the Heath Bars.
Find a large bowl in your kitchen, preferably a clear glass bowl, so that people can see the layers. Split the brownie pan in half, crumble up the brownie pices into chunks, and put them in the bottom of the bowl. Then take half of the chocolate mousse, and spread it over the brownies. Then, take one container of Cool Whip and spread it over the mousse. You may not use that whole container, but I have found that I usually need more than half, so eyeball it according to your bowl. Your next step is to take the crumbled Heath Bars and sprinkle them over the Cool Whip. Do that whole layering process one more time, with the remaining ingredients, for a total of eight layers.
Now look at our masterpiece from the side of the glass bowl. Admire all 8 layers. Beautiful! Now, here is the important part. You will need one large spoon to serve this. Have your guests dig right in with the large spoon and serve in individual bowls. Have them dig down deep so that they aren't missing anything. In their bowl it will not look as pretty - just a bunch of goo! But then when they dig in with their small spoon, it all comes together for the tastiest dessert they have ever tasted. Beware of the grim reaper - Death By Chocolate is knocking on your door!
