How to Decide on Getting a Tattoo

Mercedes M
I had wanted a tattoo for years but couldn't decide on what exactly I wanted. Then I had two I really liked but couldn't decide on which one or where I'd put it. I fell in love with the idea of getting a Mercedes emblem since that's my name. Some people hated the idea while others thought it would be funny. My second idea was my initials written in cursive followed by lips that were blowing a kiss. Again mixed reviews by people I told. I realized it doesn't matter what they think because I have to live with it. I decided on my initials and some red kissy lips and I finally got the tattoo. I also thought of 5 helpful tips to help you decide on getting yours.

1.Location- Think about this one long and hard. Where you get it is a major decision. It's more important then what you will get. There were a couple of places I knew I would never get a tattoo like my lower back or my abdomen in case I have children one day. I knew I did not want my tattoo to be seen when I am at work and even just hanging out. I wanted my tattoo to be hidden and just for a couple pairs of eyes. I decided on my front upper thigh. It sounds weird but trust me it looks good.

2. Size- Think about where it is and how it will look being a certain size. I didn't want my tattoo covering my whole thigh, that would just look ridiculous. Also think about how much it will hurt. I am not good when it comes to pain so I wanted it to be on the smaller side. Take into consideration the time it will take to get the size you want and how much pain you can handle.

3.What It Is- Will you like what you got 20 years from now? If your grandchildren see your tattoo with you be proud to explain why you got it? These are things I thought of before I got my ink. I know that even when I am older I won't regret getting what I got. I think it's creative and I like how I capitalized the first M and lowered the other two. It's Mmm like Campbell's soup! Be creative and know that you are the only one that has to like it.

4.Find A Good Tattoo Artist- A girlfriend and I went to Vegas to celebrate her birthday and one night after partying she decided to go to a well known tattoo parlor inside one of the casinos. She got a cute small tattoo on her finger and for $120 it was done very well. The next day I wanted to get my tattoo so we went to a place a local recommended and this place was a dump. They had no respect for the customers and the place was dirty. I ran out of there so fast I almost left behind a flip-flop. When I got back home I did research and asked around until I found the perfect place for me. Just make sure you have an idea of who you are getting the tattoo from.

5.How Much Do You Want To Spend- These things can be very expensive even if you want something small, like my friends finger tat. Size can be a factor but so can the artist you choose. While your doing your research on artists make sure you ask for a quote. They can usually tell you right over the phone a ballpark figure of what they would charge. Stay within your budget and don't rush into anything.
