How to Decide If You Need a Different RV Camper

Cheryl Dennett
There may come a time when you think you need to make a change in your RV camper. Maybe your family is growing and you would like more space. Or, perhaps your children have moved into their own home and you think that a smaller RV camper would be more convenient. Here are some tips to help you decide if getting a new-to-you RV camper is the thing to do.

Sometimes the decision to get a newer RV camper has nothing to do with family size. Maybe you have owned your current RV for a while and have saved up some money. You are looking to trade in your RV for a newer and maybe nicer model. One thing that can be very important for you to know is that newer models usually weigh less than their older counterparts. Compare a new RV of the same length and the same options to the one you own now. You may find that you could save enough in gas, because of the lighter weight, to pay for the newer model over a very short time.

Appliances in new RV campers have also been upgraded since your old RV was made. The newer models have appliances that are made for campers, not just home appliances scaled down. These newer appliances take into account the need to save space and weight in a camper. There are also new layouts and storage options that were not available 20, or even 10, years ago.

A newer RV camper with a newer motor will, naturally, get better gas mileage. This is in addition to the effect that the light weight will have on the gas mileage. Advancements have been made on motors as well as the weight of the camper, itself. This will add up to a much better fuel economy and that means more money to spend on other aspects of your vacation.

If your children are getting older and need more space to sleep and do everyday activities, a larger RV camper may be the answer for you. It will do you some good to shop around. See what it will cost for just a bit bigger vehicle. With the new innovations in space saving, you may not need to have a much bigger vehicle to get the additional space your growing family needs. Be sure to check the weight limits on the bunks. They may not be suitable for older children.

Some families will be getting smaller. Some, or all, of your children may have moved into their own homes and started their own families. So, now you just need room for the two of you. Perhaps a smaller RV camper, such as a truck or foldup camper, may be just what you need. Again, shop around and you will find a good deal. If you do not get in a rush, you may find a wonderful RV camper that is just what you need for the two of you to be able to take more vacations for less money than you could in your old camper.

You should be aware that RV campers will depreciate in value in much the same way as cars do. If you are going to sell your old RV, you need to check on what it is worth, as you would a car you planned to get rid of. Check with dealers or even classified ads to see how much you can get for your used vehicle. You might be surprised and get much more than you could if you traded it in on a new RV camper.

Whatever your new situation is, you need to decide if it is time for you to get a different RV camper. Just be sure to take your time and review all the options. Hopefully, these tips will help you make the correct decision.
