How to Decide If You Should Homeschool

Determining If Your Family is Suitable

Carrie Lowe
Many people believe that homeschooling is typically accompanied by families that are overly religious. Most mistakenly believe that if you are a homeschooler that you are at church anytime the doors are open, and the mere thought of evolution will send you into a huge tizzy. Trying to describe all home schools in this manner often finds many people confused about whether they would make a suitable homeschooling family. Trying to squash all of the misconceptions that are around is never easy, but I am going to take the time to help you determine if being a homeschooling family is possibly right for you.

If you are completely upset with the academic performance that your child is receiving you might want to consider homeschool. You may have a child that is gifted, or you might even have a child that is several grades behind. Regardless of their placement level, you need to be aware that you should not have to deal with a poorly performing school. Additionally, private schools that are extremely expensive are often not the best answer; many parents of privately schooled children are still upset each year to discover their child is not in the appropriate place academically.

Perhaps you live in an area where the schools are simply not doing their best to ensure the safety of your child. This is happening more and more across the country as the number of violent outburst at schools continue to climb. With weapons and drugs, sliding into schools at even younger ages the amount of monitoring that schools are doing is frankly appalling to many people. It is important to learn what you are able to expect your child's school to offer and decide if this is ample protection for you.

Many other parents often find that their child is not a good match for the teaching styles. Some children require additional time with the teacher, and other children do best when they are left on their own. Some children even do best with a computer and some books to completely manage their own educational future. Schools at this point have not caught up to this ability, rather all students are taught the exact same material, at the exact same time, in the exact same manner. Often this finds numerous students in each classroom not really understanding the materials and being left behind.

The realization that many families homeschool for reasons other than religious is a shock for many. The truth is there though, from my personal experience, I have met many families who are both religious, as well as non-religious and they all share a deep love of their children in common. An additional common aspect is the desire to see their child succeed, and this is how you can really decide if homeschooling is right for you. An overwhelming desire to see your child achieve anything they desire is enough to help you guide them through their schooling at home.

Great points. Our main reason for the decision to homeschool was not based on religious factors, but academic ones.
