It can be done at home or at the dentist office. This article will explain the various tooth whitening processes and how to choose which tooth whitener is best for you.

To achieve a brighter smile it is important to understand what kind of product you need. There are two main types of tooth discoloration. Extrinsic, which are stains caused on the outside of the tooth from beverages, food, tobacco, etc. Intrinsic discolorations are caused by damage to the tooth itself or from taking medication such as tetracycline. Determining what kind of tooth whitening system is best for you will be determined by what kind of discoloration you are trying to remove and the brightness you are trying to achieve.

The following are the three basic processes involved in tooth whitening and their approximate cost.

In Office Tooth Whitening

This type of whitening is also know as bleaching and is done in the dentists office by a professional. In office tooth whitening is the fastest way to achieve the best results. You will see results immediately. The process includes using peroxide for 15-20 minute intervals. it may be repeated for more stubborn discolorations. The average cost of in office tooth whitening is around $650 per visit. it should take about an hour.

Professional Take Home Tooth Whitening Systems

This type of tooth whitening system is done at home under the direction of a dentist. These products are the same as the professionals use but just in lower concentrations. You will use custom made bleaching trays for 10-20 minutes typically and repeat the process as needed. This type of tooth whitening costs about $125 on average. This works well for those with more complicated discoloration but don't want to go to the expense of in office whitening.

Over the Counter Tooth Whitening Systems

Over the counter tooth whitening systems are by far the most widely available systems as well as the most affordable. These kits include a balancing agent that is not as strong as the professional take home kits. These are good for people with light discolorations. Especially good for those who drink wine or smoke. I have used these myself with good results. They are easy to use but be sure to heed any warnings and use at your discretion. Take home tooth whitening systems cost anywhere from $20 to $100.

There are systems available for everyone from the budget conscious to those who need a professionals help. Choosing the system that is right for you is important. Be sure to consult a dentist before trying any whitening system. With all tooth whitening systems you will need to maintain your teeth and also do occasional "touch ups" to maintain the brightness of your smile.
