How I Decided to Start Writing

Kent Tompkins
Writing has always been a hidden passion I've had. A lot of events would occur in my life causing me to just sit around and think. Holding all those thoughts in sometimes made me depressed and very stressed and as a result I felt I had no outlet to release all of my pain. I decided to start writing when I was a little younger and I liked a young lady. The feelings I had for her caused me to write to her because I was so shy writing would be the only way I would be able to express my feelings to her. Although the outcome had me feeling very embarrassed I still released all of the emotions that were inside me from that situation. As I began growing up I began to see that my writing had potential to become great but I was very lazy about the way I described things.

My imagination was great but description was a downfall for me. For example in the 5th grade my teacher had the class describe why a guy decided to go for a swim in the summer time. After sitting and thinking my answer to that question was "because it was hot". That was my answer and it made my parents along with the teacher chuckle but they saw there was room for improvement. They encouraged me to take my time writing and think before I just scribble things on paper. As the years passed and I went on to high school I still didn't realize my potential simply because I refused to sit and write a paper especially if I felt it was too long.

I was very lazy and that was very obvious to my instructors. After reaching the first half of my senior year in high school I encountered an English teacher who really brought writing out of me. I began to put feeling into my writing and I began reaching people to the point I began assisting others with their papers. This began to make me feel good and I sit and think sometime if writing should be the career I pursue. I worry sometime that the writer's world is so competitive that someone like me wouldn't be able to make it or even be able to compete with these world renowned authors that are out there. Making an attempt to be a writer won't be a bad Idea so here I am trying it and hopefully I can be successful.

I am a man with a plan to be great at all I do in life. I enjoy music and dealing with electronics mostly. I also enjoy writing about any topic that comes to mind. Out of all my goals, success is the number...  View profile

Kent, after reading many of your wonderful articles, I'd say your 5th grade teacher AND your parents would be most proud my friend. For my sake & for all the AC readers, it was for our benefit. You've got a gift at it friend, I have no doubt about it. I can see you publishing a book someday, & several others here at AC have a book just waiting to bust out. That's the main reason I wrote the article, How To Write and Self-Publish Your Own Book. I can see you doing this, simply from what I see as your passion & desire in writing books. Well done with this one. You explained quite well how that fire was lite! : - )
