How to Declutter a Bathroom Closet

Bathroom closets are often a haven for well-developed clutter. Even though this eyesore is usually not exposed to the public, it can still frustrate residents that randomly misplace items in the mess. Messy closets also tend to get dirty, and it does not make a lot of sense to place hygiene items in a dirty storage space. Fortunately, there are a number of methods that can be used to organize the bathroom closet.

First of all, get shelves if there are not already shelves. Adjustable shelves can be purchased at home improvement stores, department stores, and perhaps even some office supply stores. For bathroom closets, the white grid shelves are generally the best choice, and different colors can be purchased for cosmetic purposes. There shelves do not collect dust and debris as easily as more solid shelves, and assembly is just an instruction manual away. At least two, possibly three, shelves will go a long way in decluttering a bathroom closet. Make sure that the lower shelf is not too low because somethings can be stored under this shelf.

When it comes to organizing things on the shelf, put taller things towards the back and smaller items towards the front. With this system, taller items do not get shifted around while someone is searching for a smaller item. Group like items together, so that the items are easier to find. For example, put the razors by the shaving cream, instead of the shampoo. It may be funny to see some men discover feminine products when they are searching for the tweezers, but sometimes it is kinder to simply keep things in a more organized place.

For storage of smaller items, and for the purposes of taking advantage of space, consider buying a basket that hangs on to the closet door. This can also be used to store smaller items that will slip through the shelves. However, do not get in the habit of simply tossing items randomly into the hanging basket. That defeats the purpose of organization. These baskets can be purchased at department stores.

Storage bins can be used to utilize the space under the lowest shelf. Plastic storage bins can be purchased at almost any retail store. Items such as bathroom cleaning supplies can be kept in these containers, and that prevents chemicals from coming in unnecessary contact with other belongings. Additionally, items such as buckets and some other cleaning utensils can be stored here.

Decluttering a closet can be a terrible pain, so the best plan is the plan of prevention. By keeping an organized closet, it will not become necessary to spend a lovely day indoors sorting cotton balls from shampoo bottles. Most of the necessary supplies are relatively inexpensive, but the motivation it takes to clean out a closet cannot be purchased at any store- it is best to get it clean and keep it clean.
