How to Declutter a Coat Closet

Ways to Make Your Front Closet More Organized and Presentable

As the seasons change, so do outerwear needs. Whether it's a heavy coat, a light jacket, or something in between, the best place to store it is near the front door. When this is a closet, as opposed to a coat rack, it is usually small and cluttered. Often, storage in coat closets is limited to a rod and one shelf. Decluttering the coat closet and adding some storage will make it more organized and presentable.

Like every other space, coat closets can become cluttered. They usually aren't very large, which means that space is at a premium. Take a look inside your front closet. Is it crammed full of coats? Do you see items that don't belong there? If so, you need to declutter that closet. If you don't already have a closet organizer, this is the time to get one. Modular closet systems have drawers and shelves in addition to the requisite rod. Components are available at home improvement stores. If you're not comfortable with the idea of installing a system, a nightstand with drawers or a table with at least two shelves should work; you would also be able to take it with you if you move.

Once you have the storage system of your choice, grab some boxes; you're ready to begin decluttering the coat closet. Start going through the closet's contents. Designate one box for things that should return to the closet, one for items to be moved elsewhere, another for things you'd like to sell, and yet another for items to be donated to charity. Be prepared to throw away anything that has no value. Remove everything; the closet will have to be empty when you install the modular system. If you're using a nightstand or table instead, you'll still need plenty of room to maneuver it into place.

Before putting the storage system in place, take a few minutes to do some quick cleaning. Vacuum or mop the floor, depending on the type of flooring, and wipe down anything that looks dusty. When you're finished, you can start putting things back inside the closet. Just remember that you're trying to declutter the coat closet, so don't put anything back in without a good reason.

When deciding on which outerwear to return to the coat closet, consider the time of year. Heavy coats, raincoats, light jackets, boots, and outside-only shoes should be stored there in the appropriate season. Use sturdy hangers for the coats, and keep a few extras on hand for those of your guests. Earmuffs, scarves, headbands, gloves, and winter hats can be stored in a drawer; they'll still be there when you need them. If there are several people in your household, store each person's belongings in zippered bags before placing them in the drawer together.

Think about what other items you'll need when you head out the door. You probably won't want to keep your wallet or purse there, but what else might be useful? If you have a dog, putting a hook inside the coat closet can help ensure you will always find the leash. If you want to keep a set of keys there, add another hook. Sunscreen and protective lip balm should also be readily available; keep some in the coat closet. A compact umbrella or two would also be a good idea. A small drawer could hold a flashlight with extra batteries, for inside or outside use.

When you're finished organizing and decluttering your coat closet, you'll have an attractive and presentable place to hang everyone's coats. You'll be able to find the items you need to grab when rushing out the door, and you won't be afraid to let your guests see where their coats are hanging!

I've been de-cluttering for the past weeks. Closet organizers are great. I've got a free standing unit in my master closet. I've been thinking about upgrading to a built in unit.
