Research by looking at other beach houses. The best way to start decorating your beach house is to look at what other people have done first. This doesn't mean you have to copy them piece-by-piece - these examples are there to give you an idea of how you can go about decorating your home. After you see what other beach houses look like, then you can decide what you like, don't like and what you would change of an existing look. From these selections, then...
Design a theme and execute it throughout your beach house. You have plenty of options when decorating your beach house, which can become very overwhelming. Pick a theme for your home to narrow down your decorating ideas. Do you want a native/tropical theme, Survivor-eseque or something along the lines of Gilligan's Island? Do you want to keep to it local (say, with palm tree plaques seen in Miami) or go beyond the hemisphere (coral pieces from Hawaii)? Whatever you decide, make sure it aligns with what you want and what you envision.
Pick concise colors (depending on your theme). The colors you choose in arrangements, painting and accents really depend on what theme you choose. Use these colors to your advantage to further execute your theme. If you had a tropical scene in mind, think of oranges and pinks (like sunsets and wild flowers). If you have a calm marina in mind (think yachts and lifesavers), think subdued blues and greens for more serene rooms.
Shop around for knick-knacks. Accent your theme with various items, especially if you want a more "concrete" theme. You can always get lifesavers to hang on your walls, but challenge yourself to think outside of the box. You can stay modern (say, with decorative bath towels for your shower) while at the same time return to familiar oceanic images (bath towels with printed starfish or sailboats). Lastly, don't go overboard. These knick-knacks can certainly clutter your home, which won't leave you much room to enjoy the scenery!
Some examples of online stores with beach-related knick-knacks include:

If you have a view, use your windows. Use your windows to bring in natural light and give a view to the ocean nearby. By having your windows open, you'll create a very natural atmosphere and completely fill your home with an ambiance you cannot recreate in the suburbs. Accent your windows with curtains, maintaining colors kept in mind for your theme.
And lastly, enjoy your home. Sprucing up your beachside home should be a fun experience. Get your whole family involved in decorating. Ask your kids what colors they would like to see in the kitchen. Ask your spouse whether or not they think something's missing. Engage your loved ones with your home, because without their help, it won't last longer than a summer vacation.

I have recently done some decorating to my new beach house that is on the Gulf of Mexico coast. I decided to make it more of a customized theme to my personality and interests in life. I ordered a custom metal art marlin with complementary metal sea gulls. It is beautiful because it is tempered metal and boy does it shine. It really fits our fishing interests to meet the custom requirement of our home decorating theme at the beach house. Here is some information about the home decorating with custom metal art work http://www.squidoo.com/metal-art
