First how many guests will you have?
Will everyone fit around your table? Will you have an adults' table and a table for the kids? Will you need several tables?
How will you serve your food?
Will you be serving family style - pass foods around the table - or will you serve a buffet line? If you have many guests, it may be best to set your table, but let guests pick out foods in a buffet line.
Think about what you already have [or your neighbor or sister] that will work to pull your table decorations together.
Do you want to use Grandma's tablecloth, a couple of your own, or plastic?
Do you plan to use your best dishes, mix and match your dishes or use paper/plastic?
Will you be eating at night or in a darker room where candlelight is stunning? Or will you be in a sunlit room overlooking the out of doors?
I will give you three awesome tables you could copy or by which you could base your own table. Before you make your final plans of what to buy, truly think about what you have on hand.
Suggestions include:
Candles
Candleholders - can include glasses for elevation or for holding candles
Greenery - live or artificial
Candy canes, balls, bells, flowers, ornaments, pictures, books, trees, santas or snowmen - or whatever could be your theme.
TABLE NUMBER ONE:
I wanted a green tabletop, but my tablecloth was a bit too small. A larger red tablecloth was simply spread underneath. Tall wine glasses were placed along middle of table with votive candles inside. [I used red glasses with white candles, but clear glass with red candles would be great.] A cupcake "tree" was placed in the middle with wider, but short candles. Sparkly red and green balls were scattered along the greenery with some gold glittery holiday garland. [Acorns could be sprayed or any bling you like could be added.]
Gold place mats were put under red dinner ware. Glasses were clear with stems. Green napkins were folded into tree shape and put on top of plates. Christmas tree place cards were set in front of the plates.
Each chair was tied with a big red bow.
TABLE NUMBER TWO:
Grandma's large old white tablecloth was spread across the table. Next a green runner was placed in the center. [This could simply be a piece of fabric - or - it could be something really special.] The corners of the tablecloth were tied with wide green ribbon. Greenery sprayed with gold paint was placed along the runner. A collection of snowmen were then added according to size. White foam balls of snow were placed among the snowmen. For the centerpiece, the kids glued pictures of everyone onto round foam balls which we placed on a variety of candle holders. Green and red napkins were joined together and then fluffed to open at the top and were placed in red drink glasses. The dinnerware used was our red and green Christmas dishes. Dessert was served on clear plates with each stacked on a red plate.
This table was enjoyed by several generations - we were all Christmas kids!
TABLE NUMBER THREE:
Use paper or plastic red table coverings with red and white stripe or green paper/plastic dishes and glasses. Place any special Santa or larger centerpiece in middle of the table. Place 2 or 3 glasses filled with candy canes along the center of the table. If the middle needs filling, add some Christmas balls of green, red and silver.. For place cards, put small piece of white paper around small candy cane. Type or print person's name on the paper. Use red paper napkins tied with green or stripe Christmas ribbon.
You can often find red and white stripe paper ware in card shops, dollar stores, or box stores. However, we all know that sometimes when you're looking for a special thing - you won't be able to find it. Just learn to be flexible and move over to plan B. Sometimes that even works out better.
Enjoy. Have fun. Don't worry about everything being perfect. We do love to be pampered a bit, and Christmas is a great time to give and receive some pampering. An awesome table for your gathering will set the theme of your time together. Now you know it won't take a lot of time, money and work.
