Consider colors that are gender neutral for the base coat of paint on the wall which will become the starting point for the décor of the room. Colors such as green, yellow, teal, or cream can be made to be more focused towards a girl or a boy with the accessories that you choose, the window treatments and even the furniture or art that is placed in that area of the room.
Using accessories to define each part of the space is very important. When decorating a nursery for twins that aren't the same sex, it is important to remember that each is going to eventually need their own space, why not start the design now while they are young, and they can grow into it?
Use some sort of open faced large shelving to define the space without breaking it up and making it appear smaller. Each side of the space can be defined with this, and the crib, and other furniture should match. This open faced shelving could be wonderful to store baskets full of diapers and other baby supplies as well as toys accessible to the bottom shelves in the future.
Accessories such as pink, lilac and white go very well with all neutral colors for the little girl's part of the room. Blue, green and darker accessories go very well with the yellow, cream, or green walls to define the masculine part of the room. Consider different pieces of art on the walls that separate the spaces, and family portraits or names of the children or shared shelving if there is a wall that is shared between the two.
If possible, the room should have two closets to accommodate the clothing and accessories for the babies.
If the room has two windows try to plain around the space so that each of the sleeping area for the children, as well as playing areas, will receive the same amount of light.
It can be helpful to re-install the lighting so that it can be changed for each part of the room, if this is impossible than lamps, or dimming switches can be used to achieve the same effects. This way, each twin will not be disturbed should the other be wide awake!
