How to Decorate a Child's Room

Creating a Fun Environment for Your Child

Robert Walden
Have you been at a crossroads trying to decorate your child's room? There are many impediments to designing the room of children but the challenge need not be a threat. Obviously, the starting point is the age of the child and sometimes also the number of children living in a given room.

Keep the following points in mind while decorating your child's room and you can be sure to find a happier child at home.

Themes are a great idea but children grow out of these very quickly and it is not very cost effective to keep decorating and redecorating.

A great way of keeping the themes of the room updated is to choose certain important items to remain the same but change the accessories. Keep the walls, lighting and furniture intact. Changing the bed covers, or adding pillow cases with cartoon characters and using theme based stationary on the table is a more economical way to keeping to the spirit of the theme based room.

A baby's room is relatively easy to decorate considering that the parents make all the choices and decisions.

But it is essential to have pleasant lighting and colors in the room to create a relaxed atmosphere for the baby. Make provisions for as much natural lighting as possible and this goes for any room in the house.

While decorating a child's room one of the most important factors is to make it an accident free zone. Do this by choosing furniture with rounded and padded edges rather than sharp ones.

If your child is old enough and has opinions of his/her own take them into consideration and decorate their rooms on those lines.

Create specialized areas like a play area and a study area and a sleeping area to keep their activities from merging.

This idea works well in a small house where there aren't different rooms to accommodate children during their different activities. An exclusive play area away from school materials removes the child from any kind of stress associated with doing work. At the same time an exclusive study area helps focus concentration. Let the play and study areas be well lit.

Let there be lots of space if possible while decorating your child's room to accommodate all the friends who are going to come and hang out there.

If you are going to fit more than one child into one room then you should definitely keep emotions and tempers in mind while decorating the room. The best is to create two areas within the same room with different themes to keep intact the individuality of each child. But if the children agree on a common theme there is nothing like it.

Storage is a big subject but just keep your eyes open for these multi-purpose beds and tables that come with lots of storage space.

Finally, it goes unsaid that while decorating a child's room, the most important design secret is lots of TLC!

I have to say I do not like the idea of a study area in the bedroom. Studying should be an activity that is done with the parents for quite a long stretch of the child's total time in school. I also have to say that a computer with internet access in the child's room ( which is not something you mentioned...so nothing personal about your article) is a bad idea. Even teens...or maybe that should be especially teens should know a parent is very aware of what is happening while the child is online. Again, computing should more or less be a family activity to some degree.
Parental involvment and awreness is part of that TLC you mentioned.
I fully agree with what you said about themes....but they are fun and can be accomodated to an extent.
Being a professional artist it is really easy for me to make prints or even customize bedding with a theme.
My kids know I draw the line at cartoons...but other themes can be great and provide design focus.
