How to Decorate Halloween Eggs

Decorative Eggs Are Not Just for Easter!

If you or your kids like to decorate eggs for Easter, you should try your hand at decorating eggs for Halloween! You can create some fantastic Halloween eggs and turn them into Jack-O-Lanterns, ghosts, Dracula and more!

To decorate your Halloween eggs, you will need white eggs and egg decorating supplies. If you can't find any egg decorating kits, you can use food coloring and other non toxic supplies such as non toxic markers, crayons, pens, glue, etc. If you are not going to eat the eggs, you can use any supplies you want to decorate them. These eggs will come out so cute (I mean spooky) that you probably won't want to keep them in the refrigerator. So it might be a good idea to just invest in eggs that you are willing to let go bad. Then decorate away and display the eggs in your home for everyone to see. After Halloween, just toss them out!

To make a dye bath for your eggs, pour some water into a small cup or bowl, leaving room so that the water will not overflow when you add the egg. Then add vinegar to the water. You want to add about a tablespoon or so per cup of water. It does not have to be exact. Then add a few drops of the food color of your choice. You will need orange for pumpkins, so you can just mix red and yellow. Green also comes in handy for zombie eggs or Frankenstein monster eggs.

Ghost Halloween Eggs: Just leave the egg white and draw on a ghost face with a black marker (remember, use only non toxic supplies if you plan on eating the eggs). You can draw a variety of faces including spooky smiles, open mouths, big eyes. Or you can try some friendly ghosts by using these ghost face ideas.

Jack-O-Lantern Halloween Eggs: Dip your eggs into an orange dye bath as stated above. Then let the eggs dry. Use a black marker or egg decorating pen to draw on the Jack-O-Lantern face, but make sure you hold the egg sideways so it looks more like a pumpkin. After you draw on the face, you can use brown or black to create lines. You can also make a stem using green construction paper and gluing it to the top of the pumpkin. You can also just glue on the facial features if you like by cutting the features from black construction paper. You can see a sample of a Jack-O-Lantern Halloween egg in the bottom of the basket in this photo (you'll get some other neat ideas by looking at that photo too).

Dracula Eggs: Draw some eyes and a nose using black. Then draw a red mouth and create the look of fangs by drawing a black tongue and leaving the white of the egg showing through to make the fangs. Also draw on a Dracula hair do with the pointed hair. You can see an awesome sample of a Dracula egg here, along with a black cat, a green monster and more.

A fun way to display your Halloween eggs is to make collars to hold them up. Just cut rings from an empty toilet paper roll or empty paper towel roll. You can cut the rings about an inch wide. Then decorate the rings to match the eggs. A Dracula collar could be painted black with a blood red neck tie. A Frankenstein collar could be painted green and could have nuts and bolts sticking out each side of the neck.

Have fun decorating your Halloween eggs. Just remember to be safe and don't eat any eggs that you are concerned about. It's best to just have fun with the decorating then toss the eggs when Halloween is over.
