Decorate your home using what you already have
This may seem like a simplistic decorating tip, but truly assess what you own. Do you have a large record collection in your home, a dozen antique dolls buried in the attic, framed photos of travels around the globe, music instruments, toys and collectibles, glassware, dog figurines, or artwork? Almost everyone has some sort of collection hidden in their home. Remember, you do not need a hundred Chinese vases, just one or two, to decorate your living room with an exotic flare. Decorate by hanging record albums on the wall for instant artwork, or decorate your son's room with your antique train collection. This might be the time to take out those boxes in the attic and dust off some old glassware, keepsakes, and antiques. Even if you cannot decorate with them, you may find something to sell on e-bay.
Decorate your home for free by rearranging furniture
Mentally assess the large and smaller pieces of furniture in your home. If you can, decorate by coordinating furniture items that are of a similar style. For instance, the cherry wood coffee table in the living room may look better next to the cherry wood bookcase that is now in the hallway. With a little bit of legwork, you can move the bookcase to the living room and move that contemporary trophy case from your living room to the den.
Look at your home like a jigsaw puzzle with a set number of furniture pieces. Are there rooms that seem sparse or overloaded? Can that large wooden chest serve better as a toy chest for your children's room or would the dresser look better against a different wall? You will be amaze what a few simple furniture changes can make to your home.
When you decorate, avoid blocking windows. You want sunlight to be able to come in. If you have any mirrors, use them to make a crowded room seem more spacious. Experiment by hanging the mirrors both vertically and horizontally, even diagonally, if you can hang the mirror that way safely. Framed pictures and photos strategically places can easily transform the visual focus of the room, as well as moving larger items, like large potted plants or interesting figurines, into the focal point of the room.
Decorate your home by giving away excess furniture
Many times we make the mistake of filling a room with too much furniture or attempt to decorate by an overload of knick-knacks. You want to make your home as spacious as possible and avoid a cramped living space when you decorate. Do you have too much furniture in your home? Assess what furniture you really need. Could you give away that older bookcase if you had less books? Can you sell that antique vase or gaudy lamp on e-bay or at a yard sale? How many photos of the beach do you really need for your Florida room? Maybe a few shells and one or two large framed photos will do the job. Sell or give away the rest.
You will be amazed at how spacious and beautiful your home will look after you rearrange the furniture, properly display your aunt's antique perfume bottle collection, strategically decorate each room with mirrors and framed photos, and donate that old dresser with the broken drawer to the local Salvation Army. With a little bit of imagination, you can make your home beautiful for free!

Great tips. I especially like the idea of hanging record albums up on the wall!
