How to Decorate Your Home Office for Cheap

You Should Be Excited to Go to Work, Even If You're Just Going Across the Hall

Working from home can be a fun and relaxing way to earn your income, not to mention allowing you to be close to your family and other obligations. Often, however, a home office can be a less than suitable environment within which to get work done. By creating a refreshing and stimulating space in your home office, you can create a place when you feel excited and motivated to work and maybe not even feel like you're at home.

Your home office should be a place that suits you, so decorate with things you love. These tips should help you find a few inexpensive and creative ways to make your space more enjoyable.

Add Some Color to Your Home Office

There's a reason mental institutions have white walls; they're boring. Many times, however, you may not be able to paint your home office because of rental agreements or plans to use the room for other purposes in the future. This shouldn't stop you from adding a splash of color to the place.

Buy some large sheets of colorful poster board (which usually cost less than a dollar) and put them up around the room. You can cover a whole wall, create a checkerboard effect, or just put them up wherever feels right. You will already start to feel the place popping with vibrancy, and you won't have to worry about painting over anything in a few months.

Fill Your Home Office With Posters You Actually Like

In a normal office, you're forced to look at trite posters with bold (and overused) words like leadership accompanied by lackluster pictures of bald eagles and sailboats. When you work from home, you can adorn the walls with any posters you choose. Find movie posters of some of your favorite films or concert posters of your favorite bands.

If you've got a special image you would love to turn into a poster but don't know how (professional photo enlargement and printing can get pricey) visit BlockPosters.com. This site takes an image of any size and blows it up into a size big enough for a poster. Then, it gives you a pre-made file to print out each square of the poster on normal computer paper. Hang up each square and you have got a totally unique poster to keep you inspired.

If you're feeling particularly artsy, try doing some stencil graffiti on your walls. It's a fun way to take your favorite images and turn them into permanent decorations.

Give Yourself Space to Be Creative in Your Home Office

Whether you're a writer, designer, web programmer, or any other at-home job, you need to make sure you've got lots of space to keep track of the thousands of idea that pop in and out of your head. Sticky notes are a classic for this purpose, but they can get a little boring. And what if your great idea doesn't fit on a four-inch square?

To really let your creativity run free, pick up some dry erase paint. Dry erase boards are extremely expensive, but this alternative lets you cover a whole wall in erasable material for about $20. Designate a whole wall for nothing but writing ideas. You'll be surprised how many you have once you give yourself a canvas to record them all.

Start a Home Office Garden

Sure, lots of people have plants in their office but what do they do except die in a few weeks? Instead, go for a much cheaper and stimulating experience. Plant seeds! With your own home office garden, you'll be able to watch your plants grow and feel like you're creating something while accomplishing all your daily tasks. In a few months, you will start to see your garden emerge and hopefully your business will be blooming as well.

These are just a few tips to get you started. Get creative, start decorating, and before you know it, you'll have a home office that you're excited to go to work in.
