Decorating with tapestry fabrics adds color and pattern to a room. There are a few things to keep in mind, however, which will help your use of tapestry fabrics to be successful. Tapestries are unique fabrics because they often incorporate many different colors; also, they have a richness which means a little goes a long way. Understanding how to deal with these unique properties will ensure that tapestry fabrics enhance, rather than overpower a room.

Use tapestry fabrics to 'tie together' the colors in a room

Tapestry fabrics give you a great opportunity to tie together lots of different colors. For instance, imagine a living room that is decorated in reds and blues and needs something to unify the color scheme. A chair that is upholstered in a red and blue tapestry fabric makes a great focal point to bring together the colors in the room. The same idea also works on a smaller scale; a bed that has a gold and blue bedspread is complemented by a gold and blue tapestry cushion.

Use tapestry fabrics in small amounts to add color and texture

The fabric looks so rich that a tapestry accessory need not be big to have real weight and impact. An ornate tapestry pattern on a cushion provides a focal point. Likewise, beautiful tapestry upholstery on the backs of dining room chairs adds a special touch. You can use tapestry fabric in all sorts of 'small places'. How about a foot still cushion, place mat or wall hanging?

Avoid using too much tapestry

The elaborate design of tapestry can mean that it can be overpowering if it isn't used in a subtle way. For instance, many different tapestry fabrics in competing colors can make a room look confused. Some tapestry fabric patterns are simply not made for larger decorating projects, such as upholstering a sofa or curtains.

Also, be aware that tapestry combined with too many other patterns in a room can be overwhelming. Keep tapestry fabric in proportion to the rest of the room. If a tapestry item seems to dominate the entire room, you probably used too much.

Accentuate the shimmery effect of tapestry fabrics

Tapestry fabrics often use shimmery threads in colors like gold or iridescent blue. Make the most of the 'bling' that tapestry brings! For instance, a living room with a gold chandelier and mirror frame looks great with gold tapestry fabric cushions.

The nice thing about tapestry fabrics is that they lend a special richness to a room and give you a chance to celebrate decorating!
